New Student Workshops for Department of Engineering

The Department of Engineering has a new student workshop, which opens for students this week. The space, on the third floor of John Dalton East, has multi-functional teaching facilities, student workshops and study zones.

The development of the third floor began 18 months ago, with the majority of the building work taking place over Summer. The new space includes four distinct coloured areas for student use, including a red, yellow, green and blue room, each designed with a specific purpose.

The yellow and red rooms are for teaching use, and include equipment such as 3D printers and ELVIS boards. The green room facilitates group work and students can prepare for assessments and presentations. The final room, the Blue Room, is a manufacturing space for light fabrications and has large glass windows for anyone wanting to look in and see the exciting projects that students work on!

As well as additional teaching spaces, the School has invested in state-of-the-art equipment including a local exhaust ventilation system: a cleaning system that allows the manufacturing dust to be removed from the air in the Blue Room.

Georgina Harris, Head of Department of Engineering said, “I’m really excited! I would love to be a student working in our new “Blue Room” manufacturing space.  I can’t wait to see the students’ reactions at the start of term.”

The School is grateful to the whole Faculty for their patience during the building works. In particular we would like to thank Jonathan Allerton and Maria Ball from the Faculty Projects Team who have done an incredible job. Enormous thanks to Jonathan Baker and Alison Lowe from Estates.
