Dr Sam Illingworth (@SamIllingworth) was invited by Dr Anna Slater (University of Liverpool) and Dr Tim Easun (University of Cardiff) to help develop and deliver a series of activities relating to self-assembly (i.e. where the careful design of initial components can lead to complex structures that assemble themselves) as part of the Royal Society’s ‘Science Museum Lates: The next big thing’ event.
Sam helped participants to create their own poetry using the words that occurred most frequently in selected publications by Dr Slater and Dr Easun. By turning these words into fridge magnets participants used a magnetic whiteboard to self-assemble their own creations, whilst learning about the science of self-assembly in the process. It was an extremely busy and successful event, with several thousand people getting involved!
