Dr Sarah Jones has over 15 years experience researching platelet biology and the activatory and inhibitory signalling mechanisms involved in the fine tuning of platelet responses in thrombosis and haemostasis. Recent work in Dr Jones' lab has focussed on the cross-talk between platelets and endothelial cells and how the 'health' of the endothelium dictates thrombotic responses, as well as influencing the efficacy of standard antithrombotic treatments. Current studies include developing endothelialized in vitro models of thrombosis with exposed extracellular matrices and endothelial cell phenotype relevant to cardiovascular disease, or pathogen induced thromboinflammation, to facilitate the discovery of novel therapeutic interventions.
Dr Jones also has an interest in endothelial 'health' in the placental circulation and how this impacts on fetal growth and development. Previous work has demonstrated endothelial dysfunction in placenetal vessels in pregnancies complicated by fetal growth restriction (FGR), with aboloished flow mediated vasodilatation. Current work is focussued on investigating whether vascular changes in FGR promote a pro-thrombotic environment potentially leading to placental thromboses and a poor outcome.
