Do we sense the world as the world senses us? Ingold argues that the relation between perceiver and world is not precisely reversible. It is more like breathing in and out. To breathe in is to inhale the atmosphere; it is an encompassing movement of gathering. Breathing out, however, is a targeted movement of propulsion. It weaves a texture of threads along which beings feel their way through the environment. Thus sentient life is lived in the rhythmic alternation of atmospheric immersion and haptic perception.
