Event 1 - March 9th 'Sites of Resistance: Speaking Truth to Power'

This session will consider the role of the documentary film maker in supporting challenges against injustice. The session will include the screening and discussion of sections of recent documentaries which reveal the criminalisation of certain communities, and instances of injustice by the State. This discussion is connected to the ongoing work of academics in the MMU Sociology department focussed on Joint Enterprise laws and the Hillsborough tragedy.

Daniel Gordon, Director and Producer of ‘Hillsborough’. An in-depth, moving account of Britain's worst sporting disaster, in which 96 men, women and children were killed, hundreds injured and thousands traumatised.

Anton Califano, Filmmaker and Co-Producer of ‘Killing the Law’ is a feature documentary which follows a 5-year campaign led by women to change the law & free their children from prison.

Event conveners

The ‘Sites of Resistance’ events are convened by Kathryn Chadwick, Becky Clarke and Patrick Williams from the Sociology Department at MMU. It is our view that constructs of ‘crime’ and the process of criminalisation should be subject to academic and political challenge. Yet we know that definitions of ‘crime’ and the state’s response to the ‘crime problem’ continue to have a disproportionate impact within certain communities. Through our teaching, research and wider work with communities we are seeking to examine and expose the marginalisation and criminalisation of particular groups, reflected in the continued ‘othering’ of individuals in society generally, and criminal justice specifically.
