Biography

Yener Bayramoğlu is currently UKRI/Marie Curie research fellow in the Department of Sociology. Prior to this, Bayramoğlu was a visiting professor in Gender and Queer Studies at Alice Salomon University in Berlin. He studied media and communication at Marmara University in Istanbul, and received his PhD in media and communication from Freie Universität Berlin. His PhD, a comparative historical study of queer visibility in the German and Turkish tabloid press, was undertaken with a fellowship from Rosa Luxemburg Foundation in Germany. His postdoc research on digital media and queer migration was supported by a research fellowship from Margherita von Brentano Center for Gender Studies in Berlin. Bayramoğlu worked at the international research project CILIA-LGBTIQ+ (funded by EU-NORFACE), which explored intersectional lifecourse inequalities among LGBTIQ+, as well as at the project DIGITAL HATE (funded by IFAF), which studied online racism, antisemitism and conspiracy theories during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bayramoğlu’s innovative work focuses on the intersection of (digital) media, migration, race, sexuality, borders and temporalities. He addresses these issues from a critical perspective, implementing queer theory, postcolonial theory and critical race studies. His research is based on a wide range of methods including digital ethnography, multi-sided participant observation, in depth interviews, discourse analysis and big data research. His work has been published in several journals including Media, Culture & Society and Ethnic & Racial Studies. He authored the monograph Queere (Un-)Sichtbarkeiten and co-authored Post/pandemisches Leben: Eine neue Theorie der Fragilität – both published in Germany. He is a reviewer of high-ranking international academic journals including Social Media + Society, Sexualities, and European Journal of Cultural Studies. He was a visiting scholar at University of Salzburg (Austria) in 2019, and will be a fellow of the Hagop Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies, New York University, in 2024. He has taught undergraduate and MA courses on political communication, queer media studies, digital media, and gender and queer studies at several German universities including  Freie Universität Berlin, Braunschweig University of Art,  Alice Salomon University, and Julius Liebig University, Giessen.
