Katie Milestone BA (Hons), PG Diploma, PhD has worked in the field of Sociology, Cultural and Media Studies for over 15 years.
In 2005 Katie joined the Department of Sociology at MMU and teaches sociology, media and cultural studies. She is joint Programme Leader of the MA in European Urban Cultures. This is a pioneering MA where students study in 4 different European Universities.

Katie began her academic career as a PhD candidate at the Manchester Institute for Popular Culture (MIPC) researching the role of popular culture, notably popular music, in the re-imaging of the de-industrialising city. This research focussed on the micro creative industries in the Northern Quarter of Manchester.
She began lecturing in 1995 and has taught and developed a range of courses and units at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Katie has been involved in teaching sociology, media and cultural studies and cultural criminology. She was also part of a team who developed an innovatory training course - multimedia for women in cultural industries. Between 1997 and 2002 was a Senior Research Fellow at the Manchester Institute for Popular Culture where she was the grant holder and project director of two European Social Fund projects on gender and employment in creative industries. Katie worked on these projects with partners from a range of EU member states and was the co-ordinator of the transnational partnershp.
Katie has been involved in teaching sociology, media and cultural studies and cultural criminology.
