Department of Engineering hosts 1st Annual Sports Engineering Seminar Day

Department of Engineering PhD students, Chlote Newton-Mann, Todd Shepherd, Kristina Brubacher, Charlote Moroney and Raya Karaganeva planned and executed the entire event.

PhD Students from Manchester Metropolitan University recently staged a Sports Engineering Seminar day. The ISEA, Department of Engineering and the IET sponsored the event.

The aim of the day was to promote sports engineering in an academic environment, raise awareness of the subject and disseminate the work being conducted in this field of research. There were many speakers from industry including Evotech CAE Ltd, Ansys, Cantebury and their keynote speaker Paul Barratt, who is from the Great Britain Cycling Team/English Institute of Sport. There were also talks given from leading academics such as Dr Carl Payton, Dr Matt Carré and Dr Steph Forrester as well as PhD students from Manchester Metropolitan University, Loughborough, Sheffield Hallam and Griffith University. The diversity of speakers was received positively and the timing and organisation was praised.

The day started with a tour of the university facilities including the Manchester Fashion Institute, Engineering Workshops and the Movement Lab. Following a networking lunch, which included posters and equipment being displayed. It was an all-day event and carried onto the early evening where there were Prizes and a drinks reception. The day was hugely successful, drawing crowds from all over the country with approximately 100 attendee’s; from MMU (20), Sheffield Hallam (15), Strathclyde (12), Loughborough (10), as well as Salford, Anglia Ruskin, Leeds.

The event received excllent feedback with Dr Sravanthi Sashikumar – Head of Division Mechanical Engineering, Manchester Metropolitan University saying  – “I am delighted by the over whelming response that the event has received, experts in Sport Science from across the UK & Abroad have presented their work in their subject area. It was a great opportunity for networking and collaboration.”

Additionally Caroline Adams from Sheffield Hallam University said - "It was a great day celebrating the diversity of Sports Engineering in the UK and fascinating to hear of all the different projects happening up and down the country"
