Meet our team

At MMU Sport we support our students to achieve their athletic and academic potential. Meet some of the team who will be supporting you every step of the way.

Your main points of contact will be Callum Jones, Sara Bayman and Jérôme Read - athletes in their own right.

Jérôme Read: performance sport manager and waterpolo coach

Jérôme is MMU Sport’s Performance Sport Manager and our very own Mr Waterpolo.

Jérôme was a Commonwealth Games medallist (here in Manchester in 2002), has over 150 international caps and was GB performance coach between 2007 and 2009. He first played water polo at the age of 12 and knows what decisions and sacrafices young people make to excel at sport. After making the GB Junior squads Jérôme was selected for the GB Men’s Senior Team and played in every competition and game for nine years. Success came as a player and coach as he coached both the senior and junior GB teams, coaching every one of his junior teams to finals for seven consecutive years.

Jérôme has experience of coaching men’s, women’s and LGBT teams which has taken him all over the world. Jérôme now coaches MMU Sport’s men’s and women’s water polo team.

Callum Jones: performance sport officer and basketball coach

Callum is one of our performance sport officers and has been a basketball pro for seven years, representing England at every level.

Callum grew up honing his skills at the Manchester Magic basketball club where he was named under -16 and under-18 English Player of the Year. He then moved to New York to be a student-athlete – so he knows the full extent of support our scholarship students will be looking for. Callum is an American and British citizen so feels equally at home on Route 66 and Urmston!

When he’s not playing for the Manchester Giants, Callum coaches MMU Sport's men’s basketball 1st team, who will train and play at the new National Performance Centre in Manchester. Callum is currently adding to his coaching qualifications by completing his Talented Athlete Lifestyle Support level 3 as well as his Basketball England level 3 coaching accreditation.

Sara Bayman: performance sport officer

Sara is one of our performance sport officers and is a professional netball player, captaining both England and Manchester Thunder.

She has played in the Netball Super League since its inception in 2005, winning four Super League titles, two with Team Bath and two with Manchester Thunder. Growing up in Wigan Sara’s talents weren’t limited to netball as she represented England football at under 16s.

Sara has over 80 senior caps for England, won bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games and a World Cup as well captaining England and Manchester Thunder.

Sara has an in-depth understanding of what it’s like to juggle study with elite sport. At university Sara combined a full-time international training programme with studying for her degree and spent a year in New Zealand on a sport development placement. She is also a level two qualified netball coach.
