Our team

At MMU Sport we support our students to achieve their athletic and academic potential. Meet some of the team who will be supporting you every step of the way.

Your main points of contact will be our performance team, Callum Jones and Jérôme Read - athletes in their own right.

Jérôme Read

Jérôme is MMU Sport’s Performance Sport Manager and our very own Mr Waterpolo.

Jérôme was a Commonwealth Games medallist (here in Manchester in 2002), has over 150 international caps and was GB performance coach between 2007 and 2009. He first played water polo at the age of 12 and knows what decisions and sacrafices young people make to excel at sport. After making the GB Junior squads Jérôme was selected for the GB Men’s Senior Team and played in every competition and game for nine years. Success came as a player and coach as he coached both the senior and junior GB teams, coaching every one of his junior teams to finals for seven consecutive years.

Jérôme has experience of coaching men’s, women’s and LGBT teams which has taken him all over the world. Jérôme now coaches MMU Sport’s men’s and women’s water polo team.

Callum Jones

Callum is our Performance Sport Officer and has been a basketball pro for seven years, representing England at every level.

Callum grew up honing his skills at the Manchester Magic basketball club where he was named under -16 and under-18 English Player of the Year. He then moved to New York to be a student-athlete – so he knows the full extente of support our scholarship students will be looking for. Callum is an American and British citizen so feels equally at home on Route 66 and Urmston!

When he’s not playing for the Manchester Giants, Callum coaches our MMU men’s basketball 1st team, who will train and play at the new National Performance Centre in Manchester.

Callum is currently adding to his coaching qualifications by completing his Talented Athlete Lifestyle Support level 3 as well as his Basketball England level 3 coaching accreditation.

If you like the sound of training and playing at the National Performance Centre for basketball in the UK then check out our bursary.
