Dr Shaw graduated from Imperial College, London with a BSc in Biochemistry, before completing an MSc in Forensic Science at King's College, London. Following this, she was awarded PhD from the University of Hull in 2009 for work entitled "Integrated DNA extraction and amplification in microfluidic devices." She then spent three years as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the University of Hull developing microfluidic devices for a range of forensic and clinical diagnostics applications. Dr Shaw then joined the Division of Chemistry and Environmental Sciences as a Lecturer in Forensic Biology in July 2012.

My research focuses on the development of microfluidic systems applied to the miniaturisation of molecular biology techniques. Microfluidics relates to the manipulation of liquids within an environment of micrometer dimensions. It can offer numerous advantages over conventional systems including: reduced sample/reagent consumption, increased speed of analysis and reduced likelihood of contamination. In particular, microfluidics can be used in the generation of Lab-on-a-Chip (LOC) systems in which multiple processes are integrated together on a single device. Projects include the development of LOC devices for: forensic DNA profiling, detection of sexually transmitted infections, quantification of progesterone in saliva and ancient DNA analysis.
