How will the loan be paid?

The postgraduate loan will be available up to a maximum value of £10,000 (non-means tested), paid directly to students from the Student Loans Company.

Payment dates for full-time students (course duration 12 months) will be split equally between the following payment dates:

  • Course start date*
  • Course start date plus 4 months
  • Course start date plus 7 months

*You will receive your first payment within 3-5 working days of the University confirming to the Student Loans Company that you have started your course.

Repayment key facts

  • Postgraduate loan repayments will be based on your income. UK based students will begin repayments after April 2019 and only when income is over the current threshold of £404 a week, £1,750 a month or £21,000 a year.
  • Voluntary repayment can be made before this date directly to the Student Loans Company without any penalties.
  • Repayments will be made concurrently with any undergraduate student loans you are repaying.
  • Interest will be charged at RPI +3% and will accrue from when you receive your first payment.
  • Students repaying from overseas will have a repayment threshold applied, which is based on the cost of living in their country of residence and will make repayments directly to the Student Loans Company.
  • The thresholds will be frozen until April 2021; any future changes to the thresholds will be confirmed by the Student Loans Company in due course.
  • Further information and repayment examples from Student Finance England.
