Research Degrees in

Sport History

in the Cheshire Campus

Opportunities are available to study for the research degrees of MA/MSc, MPhil and PhD, either full-time or part-time.

The work in the Sociology, Coaching and Sports Development Research Group is in diverse aspects of the critical sociology and history of sport and sport coaching, sport development, policy and evaluation, football development related projects and in physical education. It draws upon various research methodologies and paradigms and a range of theoretical perspectives. We have been linked to the work of MISPA (Manchester Institute of Sport and Physical Activity) and Cheshire East Legacy Action Plan (LEAP), which is a joint programme for our Cheshire campus and Cheshire East Council (visit MMU Cheshire London 2012 for more information), to develop a legacy from the Pre-Games Training Camps for London 2012 Olympic Games. This group has evolved from the long-standing interests and expertise within the department in many aspects of coaching, applied sport research and in the development of and through sport, with recent appointments adding professional and applied expertise and interests.

Before applying for a research degree, applicants should have a preliminary discussion with a member of staff to discuss a proposed research project.
