Project management is about managing the technical, cultural, political and financial aspects inherent in all projects. This programme will teach you about the organisational context for projects, the tools and techniques of project management, and the "soft" issues such as motivation, skill development, and politics and power issues.

Subjects covered include: accounting and finance ; people and organisations; strategy, environment and markets; information systems management; social and organisational aspects of projects; project management methods and tools; and digital project management.

A Postgraduate Diploma is awarded on successful completion of the taught units. To achieve the MSc you must also complete a project-based dissertation.

  • This programme has an advanced standing route for mature students who have relevant professional qualifications or who have previously studied for a postgraduate certificate or diploma. Through advanced standing we can give you academic credit for your current qualifications. Consequently you only need to study selected units and can achieve an MSc in a shorter timeframe.
  • There will be extensive use of the University's virtual learning environment (Moodle) to provide additional learning materials, communication and also as an aid to discussions.
  • Visits to local companies and opportunities to attend guest lectures.

About the course

This programme will teach you about the organisational context for projects, the tools and techniques of project management, and the "soft" issues such as motivation, skill development, and politics and power issues.

Units cover: accounting and finance for managers; understanding people and organisations; strategy, environment and markets; information systems management; social and organisational aspects of projects; project management methods and tools; and digital project management.

  • Consultancy Project/Dissertation

    The consultancy project/dissertation will normally take the form of an empirical piece of research conducted with academic guidance and supervision. Students receive instruction in research methods as part of the dissertation process.

  • Developing Professional Practice – Project Management

    This project allows you to work in groups on a community based assignment, honing your managerial skills in a live situation.

  • Digital Project Management

    This unit has gained professional accreditation by the Association for Project Management (APM) . It develops knowledge and skills in the management of projects within diverse digital environments; including web development, virtual and globally orientated projects. Students will be able to study and deploy a range of agile and other web based methodologies.

  • Management and Information Systems

    Information Systems Management (ISM) aims to introduce you to the essential theoretical concepts of Information Systems. You will be able to study and elaborate on the different aspects of the use of commercial Information Technology.

  • Project Management Methods and Tools

    This unit has gained professional accreditation by the Association for Project Management (APM) . It deals with a range of tools and techniques commonly used in diverse organisations to manage projects from the stages of initiation to completion.

  • Social and Organisational Aspects of Projects

    This unit has gained professional accreditation by the Association for Project Management (APM) . It deals with finding solutions to the challenges presented by the social and organisational issues in project management. Students will develop knowledge and skills in issues such as project leadership, management, communication, politics, ethics and professionalism.

  • Strategy, Environment and Markets

    Examines the broad range of factors that influence the modern business operating environment and examines how organisations can monitor and seek to respond to them.

  • Understanding People and Organisations

    Examines the human dimension of organisations’ operations and how organisational structure, culture and systems influence the effectiveness of organisational management.

Assessment details

A combination of written essays, written examinations, presentations (face-to-face or digital), and multimedia assignments (such as posters and pod casts).

Typical entry requirements

Applicants should have a good UK 2.2 degree or equivalent Professional qualifications and prior management experience may also be considered. Credit for current qualifications at or equivalent to Masters level. Applicants whose first language is not English are required to produce evidence of English language proficiency: TEFL minimum score 575 (minimum 4.0 in written test), or IELTS minimum score 6.5. Applicants who have an score of 5.5 may be considered provided they successfully complete an approved MMU English language course.
