  • This Postgraduate Diploma level of this course meets the professional standards set by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), it is accredited by CIPD, leads directly to Associate Membership and gives full exemption from their Postgraduate Diploma.
  • The course is taught by an experienced team of lecturers, many of whom have extensive experience as HR professionals, and others who are actively researching and publishing in the field.

  • The course includes a live research project leading to a Management Research Report, usually in your employing organisation. 
  • A management skills/self-development residential is included in this course. This two-day event is included in the course fee and takes place early in the first term.

Placement options

A human resources work experience placement is part of the course. Many students choose to research their dissertations in their placement organisation. Our placement team will help and support you in finding your placement, including CV and job/placement application and interview skills preparation. These skills are an excellent foundation to enhance your employability on completion of your studies.

About the course

The PgDip in HRM with CIPD equates to 135 credits and takes 20 months to complete.

Please note, the PgDip in HRM with CIPD follows a slightly different approach from the normal PgDip route in order to meet the Professional Standards. It requires completion of 120 taught credits shared with the MSc in HRM, followed by a Management Research report (15 credits) which is usually based on your employing organisation. There is also a residential event that will focus on skills and professional development.

Typical units of study may include

Year 1

You will study the following units:

  • Employment Resourcing, Relations and Law - Provides comprehensive coverage of the key strategic HR activities of resourcing and managing employment relationships within a legally compliant framework. You will apply theoretical frameworks and employment law to critically evaluate contemporary practices.
  • Leading, Managing and Developing People - This unit provides a critical evaluation of research and debate in the fields of HRM and HRD. You will examine the theoretical foundations of leading, managing and developing people. In particular, the unit will consider the nature, scope and impact of HRM, the theory and practice of leading and managing people at work, and finally will look at the field of learning and development.
  • HR in Context - This unit develops major internal and external contextual issues that shape decision making in business and in HRM.
  • Developing Skills for Business Leadership  - Studied in years one and two, this unit will equip you with management, leadership and HR professional skills to support your continuing professional development.

Note – Transfer from PG Diploma to Masters

Students who initially register for the PG Diploma programme may change to the Masters programme subject to suitable progress and supervisor availability, and in discussion with the Programme Co-ordinator. We have designed our programme to allow flexibility and such decisions can be considered in Term 1 of the second year of study.

Year 2

You will study the following units:

  • Developing Skills for Business Leadership - This unit will equip you with the professional management, leadership and HR skills that will support your continuing professional development.
  • Research Methods in HRM – This unit enables you to develop the skills required to identify and investigate HR issues in order to stimulate and support improvements to organisations’ strategies and practices and to peoples working lives.
  • Dissertation - You will be required to identify, structure, frame and investigate a complex managerial or business issue and produce a substantial written document (c 15,000 words)  of your achievements and conclusions.

Performance and Reward (30 credits)

Provides comprehensive coverage of the key strategic HR activities of managing performance and reward.  Topic will include :  HR Strategy and Performance Management, Performance Appraisal, Discipline, 360 degree feedback, Personal Development Planning, Reward Strategies, Pay, Job Evaluation, Performance-Related Pay, Incentives, Benefits, Total Reward,  

Business Psychology in Action (30 credits)

Use psychology to achieve a more productive and satisfying workplace, and develop your understanding of the psychological tools and resources available to you as a manager. Main topics will include communication, understanding individual differences at work , employee attitudes, spirituality in the workplace, selection, work-life, well-being and positive psychology,

Ethics Responsibility and Equality (30 credits)

Develops understanding of the concepts of ethics, responsibility and equality in employment. Explores implications for responsible management, and policy making. As an indication, topics will include Business Ethics, Corporate Social Responsibility, Corporate Governance, Ethical Issues around Customers and Employees,  equal opportunities and diversity management, individual equality strands (gender, race, age, disability etc.). Equalities in global context.

Strategic Learning, Coaching and Talent Development (30 credits)

Investigates the contribution strategic learning and coaching policy and practice make to organisational and individual performance. Theory and Practice of Strategic HRD,  Concepts of  learning,  talent and human development, design, implementation and evaluation of coaching and mentoring interventions.

Organisational Learning and Knowledge Management (30 credits)

This unit provides an exploration of key academic underpinnings of organisational learning and knowledge management and the implications for practitioners in facilitating learning and knowing in organisations. You will not only be exposed to traditional lecture material, involved in group discussions, case studies and tasks and work on individual background reading and activities.

Programme Review

Each programme of study that we offer undergoes an annual review to ensure an up-to-date curriculum supported by the latest online learning technology. In addition, we undertake a major review of the programme, normally at 6-yearly intervals, but this can take place at a more frequent interval where required. Applicants should note that the programme currently provided may be subject to change as a result of the review process. We only make changes where we consider it necessary to do so or where we feel that certain changes are in the best interests of students and to enhance the quality of provision. Occasionally, we have to make changes for reasons outside our control. Where there are changes which may materially affect the current programme content and/or structure, offer holders will be informed.

Assessment details

The range of assessment is carefully designed to prepare you for your developing career in HR and provides a foundation for your journey towards Chartered Membership of CIPD. It also reflects our commitment to develop both your knowledge and your practical skills.

There will be a range of written assignments, reports and case study analyses alongside a small number of written examinations. You will also have the opportunity to develop your professional skills, through practice and reflection. You will develop a record of your personal and professional development, including a plan for your future career development.  The assessment requirements for each unit is detailed below, with examinations in the two core units to comply with CIPD requirements.  We design the teaching programme for LMDP and HRMiC to provide plenty of formative learning activities.

  • Research Methods in HRM: Research Proposal 
  • Management Research Report: Written report

Management Research Report

Following training in Research Methods in HRM, you will have the opportunity to work on a 7,000-word Management Research Report (MRR) on an HR  topic of your choice, including the collection and analysis of data (usually from your employing organisation) and reflection on what you have learnt from the whole research process.

Students studying for the PG Dip undertake a shorter HR business research project and write a management report instead of those on the MSc who conduct a more substantial dissertation research project. Students who have registered for the MSc in HRM but wish to change to the PG Dip can do so during their first year of study, or later in Year 2 subject to timetable constraints and in agreement with their Programme Co-ordinator and Course Leader.

Typical entry requirements

You should have a good UK honours degree (minimum 2:2), or equivalent (including international), in any subject. We also consider applications from candidates who may not have a degree but do have equivalent professional qualifications or significant, relevant management experience.

However, for individuals who do not have a prior degree, and are presently working in a role involving elements of people management and HR, then our Certificate in Professional Studies HRM may be of interest. 

At the time of commencing the course you must be working in Human Resources or a related area.

If your first language is not English and your first degree was not taught in English, you must have an English language score of IETLS 6.5, or equivalent such as TOEFL IBT 90. If your IETLS score is 5.5 we may offer you a place on the proviso that you successfully complete an approved English language course at the University.

Typical student profile for this course

Our part-time students come with a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. A large proportion of our students some students enrol  several years after graduating with an under-graduate degree in management, or a business related field. However, our students are diverse including those with first degrees in science, arts and humanities backgrounds, and some have much more time out between their first degree and moving to post-graduate study.

Some of our part-time students have had several years of work experience in HR, or a related field. However, we also have some mature students who have more work experience and wish to change or develop their career, and choose to study towards a formal HR professional qualification alongside a postgraduate study at university.

The majority of our part-time students are from Manchester and the North-West Region, but we do find some students commute to study from further afield.
