About the course

All of our postgraduate degree programmes in Healthcare Science are built on the core values of the NHS to develop professional, dedicated and compassionate healthcare science professionals and they are underpinned by the latest research within the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

We collaborate extensively with hospitals in the Greater Manchester area and can offer opportunities for research projects in clinically relevant areas. All of our postgraduate degree programmes are accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science.

You will be assessed by critical reviews, presentations, self-managed study, extended essays and examinations. Evidence based practice and a major research project complete the MSc.

Our research

We represent one of the highest concentrations of health research excellence in the UK. We have an international reputation for research into the characteristics, limitations and adaptability of the human motor system in health and disease through an integrative approach that ranges from molecular biology to whole body studies of human movement.

We conduct basic and translational research to understand biological systems in disease, sensing and detecting by-products of disease and contemporary challenges, including ageing and development of new technologies for personalised medicine.

Scientists in our Centre for Biomedicine are pioneering new ideas with real-world application and global potential to improve health and wellbeing and make a positive difference to people’s lives.

Core Units
Advanced Biological Aspects of Disease

This unit covers aspects of immunology, cancer biology, reproductive health, infectious diseases and medical genetics. You will have the opportunity to expand your knowledge of the pathology and aetiology of these areas by investigating the philosophical concepts of biological systems in states of dysfunction. On completion of the unit you will be expected to demonstrate an appreciation of the interrelations of the pathological sciences and how, for example, a genetic predisposition can increase an individual’s risk of susceptibility to a specific cancer or immune disorder.

Analytical Techniques in Biomedical Science

In this unit you will study the analytical techniques used in modern biomedical science practice at Masters level. The topics cover underlying principles and applications of the essential analytical techniques including chromatography, electrophoresis, immunotechniques, cell culture, flow cytometry, mass spectrometry, molecular techniques and recombinant DNA technology.

Disorder Case Study

In time, healthcare scientists accumulate knowledge about a large range of disorders. Often, especially in the early days of experience, the acquisition of this knowledge is fragmented. This unit provides you with the opportunity to make a systematic, comprehensive study of a disorder. In addition to advancing your knowledge about the individual disorder, you will be expected to develop an independent critical approach to investigating, analysing and evaluating laboratory and clinical aspects of a disease/disorder and producing a case study report.

Recent Advances in Biomedical Research

This unit offers the opportunity for self-directed independent study on a particular area of topical interest in biomedical research. A broad range of topics will be available, reflecting the diverse current research interests of the academics within the School. You will work independently with guidance from an academic supervisor.

Research Methods and Ethics in Biomedical Science

This unit enables you to develop advanced skills in research methods and work towards an independent research project proposal. The unit delivery features a blended learning approach with both taught and web-based directed study. You will be expected to review and apply statistical analyses relevant to your area of practice and apply knowledge and awareness of the roles of evidence-based and ethical frameworks for the experimental design, systematic review and dissemination of scientific research. 

Research Project

This unit allows all full-time Masters students to complete an independent piece of research which is allied to their specialism, named award, employment aspirations and specific academic interests.

Likely Optional Units
Clinical Haematology

In this unit you will study the normal role of red cells, white cells and platelets in haematological processes and the changes in these roles in disease states. Regular use is made of journal articles to develop, through discussion, the ability to analyse and critically evaluate published information. On completing this unit, students will have gained confidence in evaluating new knowledge and strategies for characterising disease and will be better equipped to judge the relevance of new methods to current haematological practice.

General Clinical Biochemistry

In this unit you will cover essential concepts relevant to the practice of modern clinical biochemistry, enabling development of a systematic understanding and critical awareness of current practice. A systems approach is taken to study the biochemical disorders of the major human organs. You will be expected to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of general clinical biochemistry and originality in the application of knowledge to clinical problem solving.

Human Infectious Disease

In this unit you will study the host parasite interaction, healthcare associated infections and pathongenesis of infectious disease. You will be expected to demonstrate an appreciation of the essential concepts of medical microbiology and an awareness of current strategies and methods for laboratory diagnosis of microbiological disorders. Regular use is made of journal articles to develop, through discussion, the ability to analyse and critically evaluate published information.

Pathological Basis of Disease and Systematic Investigation of Pathological Specimens

In this unit you will develop knowledge and understanding of the pathological basis of disease and the use of histopathology and cytopathology to detect and diagnose disease as part of the clinical investigation of patients. You will gain experience of interpreting results from patient investigations. This unit is also part of histopathology specialist training and may be delivered as a combined unit or as separate units with appropriate clinical context.

Transfusion 1

In this unit you will study blood groups and disease, blood group biochemistry, transfusion science methods used in the laboratory and legislation affecting the management of transfusion laboratories. On completion of this unit, it is expected you will be better equipped to analyse, evaluate and adapt methods in transfusion science practice, research and development. Regular use is made of journal articles to develop, through discussion, the ability to analyse and critically evaluate published information.

 

Programme Review

Each programme of study that we offer undergoes an annual review to ensure an up-to-date curriculum supported by the latest online learning technology. In addition, we undertake a major review of the programme, normally at 6-yearly intervals, but this can take place at a more frequent interval where required. Applicants should note that the programme currently provided may be subject to change as a result of the review process. We only make changes where we consider it necessary to do so or where we feel that certain changes are in the best interests of students and to enhance the quality of provision. Occasionally, we have to make changes for reasons outside our control. Where there are changes which may materially affect the current programme content and/or structure, offer holders will be informed.

Assessment details

You will be assessed by critical reviews, presentations, self-managed study, extended essays and examinations. Evidence based practice and a major research project complete the MSc.

Additional Information About this Course

The programme is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science as masters level study. Please note that this qualification cannot be used as leading to eligibility for HCPC registration you should refer to the guidance on the IBMS website (www.ibms.org) if this is your aim.

Typical entry requirements

At least an upper second class UK Honours degree (or international equivalent) in biological or biomedical science is usually required. Alternatively you may be admitted with an equivalent professional qualification or significant relevant proven professional experience. Existing Fellows of the Institute of Biomedical Science are eligible for exemption from certain units of study. Students applying with HNC medical laboratory science plus 10 years' experience will be considered on an individual basis.

Modernising Scientific Careers

The School of Healthcare Science was the first in the UK to design and receive accreditation for the new Practitioner Training Programme Healthcare Science degrees commissioned by Higher Education England’s Modernising Scientific Careers. The programme combines academic study and work-based training and is a professional qualification required to practice as a healthcare science practitioner in a number of areas.
