Features and benefits of the course

  • Allows you to combine the study of two subjects.
  • Flexible study - choose the balance of your subjects in Years 2 and 3 of the degree. Named route study is available in Year 3 leading to a BA (Hons) Business or BA (Hons) Human Resource Management degree.
  • Optional four-year degree routes are available where you can spend your third year either taking a paid placement with an employer, or spending a year studying abroad at one of our partner institutions. 
  • The Faculty of Business and Law hosts two Professional Development Weeks annually. Free and open to all students, this includes a festival of skills-development activities, practical support in developing your CV and employability skills, and the opportunity to network with actively recruiting graduate employers.

Placement options

We offer four-year placement and study overseas routes, where you have the opportunity to spend your third year on industrial placement or studying overseas, after which you will return to study for your final year. You can make a decision on whether to follow this route at the end of your first year of study.

About the course

By studying the business units of this degree, you will be able to gain skills in all areas of business and make informed decisions about business strategy and operations. Your studies will draw on disciplines including business planning strategy, creative thinking, accounting and finance, leadership, marketing and data analysis.

By studying the human resource management units on this degree, you will also focus on core human resource management areas and examine how leaders develop and motivate their employees for maximum output. You will analyse issues such as the relations between employers and employee organisations (e.g. trade unions), the structure of labour markets and the wider impact an organisation can have on a variety of stakeholders and its local community.

Cross-cultural management skills are incorporated and you may choose to include a language as part of your studies, enhancing your employability with businesses that operate internationally.

Year 1

Combined Honours programmes offer you the ability to undertake two separate areas of study as either equal, major/minor or named route combinations.

In the first year, you will study each subject combination equally. Two core units for business, two core units for HR Management. The core units for year one are shown below.

Core Units
Dynamic Business Environment

The aim of this unit is to develop your understanding of a range of dynamic factors in the business environment over which organisations have limited, if any control over but nonetheless need to mitigate against.  Topics studied include markets and globalisation, technological development, fundamental macroeconomic elements and concepts, and social, cultural and ecological factors.

Human Resources Management in the Business Context
This unit covers human resource management (HRM) models, business models, recruitment and selection, HRM planning, employee relations, human resource development and contemporary issues and trends. Once the unit is completed you should be able to identify, apply and evaluate a range of HRM and business concepts and theories that relate to the management of people in a business context.
Information Analysis and Finance for Business

The key objectives of this unit are to help you to understand and interpret financial statements and use costing techniques.  Further to this you will develop your skills so that you can use digital resources to collect, organise, manage, find, analyse and present business related information.

 

Understanding and Managing People

You will study key issues from four main themes: 1.Individuals and work 2. Groups and social interaction 3. The nature and context of understanding and managing people with work and behaviour in organisations and 4.Personal and professional development

Year 2

Units of study available in Year 2 of a Combined Honours programme will depend entirely on the route you wish to take through the programme and whether there are any additional requirements for study made by a particular professional or regulatory body. This is where you will begin to shape the learning of your degree to your own interests. 

You can continue with equal study (2 units from each subject) or choose a major/minor route (3 units from one subject, 1 unit from the other subject). You must study the core unit from each subject. 

Please note that your choice of units available to study may be informed by your study choice of equal or major/minor and, for some units, the grades you achieved in Year 1. Not all units are available for all study options.

Year 3

For those on the four-year degree route, Year 3 will be spent on either placement or studying abroad at one of our partner institutions.

Those on the three-year full-time route will progress directly to their final year of study.

Units of study available in your final year of a Combined Honours programme will depend entirely on the route you wish to take and whether there are any additional requirements for study made by a particular professional or regulatory body. This is where you will begin to shape the learning of your degree to your own interests.

Programme Review

Each programme of study that we offer undergoes an annual review to ensure an up-to-date curriculum supported by the latest online learning technology. In addition, we undertake a major review of the programme, normally at 6-yearly intervals, but this can take place at a more frequent interval where required. Applicants should note that the programme currently provided may be subject to change as a result of the review process. We only make changes where we consider it necessary to do so or where we feel that certain changes are in the best interests of students and to enhance the quality of provision. Occasionally, we have to make changes for reasons outside our control. Where there are changes which may materially affect the current programme content and/or structure, offer holders will be informed.

Methods of Assessment

You will be assessed through a combination of coursework and formal examinations.

Assessment Weightings and Contact Hours

10 credits equates to 100 hours of study, which is a combination of lectures, seminars and practical sessions, and independent study. A 3 year degree qualification typically comprises 360 credits (120 credits per year). The exact composition of your study time and assessments for the course will vary according to your option choices and style of learning, but it could be:

  • Year 1 25% lectures, seminars or similar; 75% independent study
  • Year 2 20% lectures, seminars or similar; 80% independent study
  • Year 3 20% lectures, seminars or similar; 80% independent study
Assessment
  • Year 1 45% coursework; 55% examination
  • Year 2 60% coursework; 40% examination
  • Year 3 70% coursework; 30% examination

Studying a combined honours degree gives you the opportunity to improve your employability by developing skills and knowledge in two subjects.

Roles for human resource (HR) management specialists include those in HR operations and planning, employee relations, equal opportunities, recruitment, and training and development.

The course is also a good preparation for other types of management roles in business, for example in accounting and finance, marketing, and manufacturing.
