If you decide that you would like to gain a year's industry experience you can spend year 3 on placement within the fashion and clothing industry. Placement learning is a key element of the course as it allows you to apply university based knowledge, skills and understanding to the real world of work. It also gives you an advantage when you begin looking for your first job upon graduating! The day-to-day demands of such an experience are both challenging and inspirational.
Placement opportunities are available both in the UK and abroad. We have established links with companies such as Alexon, Aycem Group in Turkey, Dorothy Perkins, Tesco, George @ Asda, Flannels, Marks and Spencer, Matalan, Next, Primark, Puma, Reebok, Renfrew Collection in New York and Top Shop to name but a few.
Our dedicated Placement Team has developed excellent links with the fashion industry over the last 20 years. You will be offered support through a preparation programme of activities that includes guidance on selection procedures, working overseas, CV preparation and interview techniques.
During the Placement Year, although you will be supervised directly by the company you are employed by, you will also be allocated an Academic Mentor from the Department. They will provide support and guidance, assess your progress and generally monitor your welfare for the time you are away from the University.
This programme is unique in its project-based approach. Live projects and real world scenarios developed with our industry partners will challenge you to engage in contemporary business issues through problem based learning. Working on live projects will nurture critical thinking and allow you to look at problems from different perspectives and create innovative solutions.
You will develop keen business acumen, considering customer experience and the needs of consumers when engaging with a brand. In addition, you will acquire fundamental business knowledge in marketing commerce, law logistics and human resources. This will be underpinned by strategic knowledge, which will facilitate synthesis in your learning.
The course uniquely offers a range of master classes from current business professionals allowing you to relate your learning to real business situations. You will have the opportunity to go on a year-long work placement in the UK or abroad and to undertake international study trips.
In your first year, you will examine the fashion industry at all market levels and gain an in-depth understanding of the customer journey and how consumers engage with a brand. You will also develop insight in the processes involved in taking a garment from the initial design concept to the customer. This is underpinned by core business knowledge in finance, human resource, economics and law.
The course has been designed in consultation with industry and you will be supported by industry mentors and work on real life scenarios and projects. You will also benefit from a Master Class series, with sessions delivered by our industry contacts and renowned academics from our partner institutions.

This unit will develop the essential skills you need as a business manager. You will examine the strategies adopted by organisations and the theories underpinning them and business related legal frameworks. There will be a fundamental understanding of statistical techniques used to measure and benchmark business performance.
This unit will allow you to gain a holistic understanding of consumer experiences within multi-channel fashion environments. You will explore retail environments and the effectiveness of interactions and relationships between the customer, brand, marketing communications and beyond. Discover, create and rationalise strategies that make compelling and successful customer journeys and enhance fashion retail environments.
Designed to equip you with knowledge of current and future technology trends influencing fashion, you will build and understanding of project management and the role it plays in increasingly technology driven fashion organisations. This unit is designed to provide you with knowledge of current technologies disrupting and affecting fashion businesses and business models. You will also explore how successful fashion businesses are now integrating technologies seamlessly to enhance the customer experience.
Building your critical awareness and business acumen within the fashion marketplace, you will develop your understanding of the dynamics of both the local and global fashion sector. You will examine the retail strategies employed by leading firms to stay ahead of their competition, impact of innovation and service offering.
In your second year you will work strategically and apply your knowledge to projects that have been sponsored by industry. We will also support you in building a professional portfolio that will allow you to demonstrate your achievements to perspective employers. If you choose to go on a placement you will also receive support in preparing for this.

People management will be considered as an essential skill for optimising business performance.
Focussing on the concepts and value in creating a memorable brand and service related customer experiences, this unit takes a customer centric view of consumer relationship management to enhance brand loyalty in a multi-channel, technology enhanced communications environment. You will explore, evaluate and create fashion related customer experiences that differentiate brands in a competitive context and examine how these are integrated into contemporary marketing strategy.
This unit provides core knowledge of strategic fashion management and understanding of managing business activities in organisations. You will explore the different business levels of strategy and how businesses sustain competitive advantage through strategy formation and implementation, purchasing and supply chain strategies.
Thi unit will enable you to develop professional skills, behaviours and attitudes relating to your chosen industry sector. Professionalism, employability, career routes and professional development will be explored.
If you decide to opt for the four year sandwich route, Year 3 will be spent on a full-time placement, with opportunities available in both the UK and abroad.
In your final year it is intended that you will undertake a bespoke project defined by you in partnership with business.
You will also take part in industry workshops to create an authentic business environment, allowing you to build confidence in your own abilities and to explore new avenues of thinking.
It is our aim that by the end of your studies you will have at least three professional references, gained through your interaction with industry, that you can give to prospective employers.

The emphasis will be on applying business acumen, research skills and professional practice to and enterprise project within a project management framework by negotiating and defining a project proposal for a business venture. Working with industry mentors, you will be required to define a project proposal for a business venture. The project should include primary and secondary research activities and result in measurable business activities or plans that can be analysed in the context of the fashion marketplace. You may undertake company-sponsored projects as part of their proposed activities.
Examine business and marketing strategies within a global context, building on knowledge to develop innovative internationalisation strategies for sustainable growth. Considering business within a global context, this unit enables you to develop your knowledge of global strategies adopted by organisations and apply critical thinking to explore new opportunities and strategic directions. You will focus on organisations international marketing strategies and develop innovative and sustainable market entry strategies.
This unit focusses on excellence in innovation and entrepreneurship at all levels of the fashion industry. It examines how fashions most renowned leaders and entrepreneurs employ their expertise and vision to drive firms forward in an increasingly complex and competitive trading environment. In collaboration with industry partners, this unit challenges you in teams and as individuals to respond to a series of leadership and entrepreneurship challenges at the heart of contemporary fashion business issues.
Each programme of study that we offer undergoes an annual review to ensure an up-to-date curriculum supported by the latest online learning technology. In addition, we undertake a major review of the programme, normally at 6-yearly intervals, but this can take place at a more frequent interval where required.
