My profile

Biography

My research interests are centred around the emerging science of planetary health; in particular, how food systems interact with planetary health and, in turn, impact human health and the natural systems on which it depends. Global food systems are dramatically affecting air quality, water quality, human exposure to infectious diseases, and the habitability of the places where humans live.

Words of wisdom

Eat wisely - our lives depend on it.

Academic and professional qualifications

A graduate in agriculture, I also have an MSc in International Food Marketing from Newcastle University and a PhD from the University of Reading (Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences) in Sustainable Food Quality for Health. My thesis developed a conceptual framework for health professionals to train and enable them to lead in the transition to more sustainable diets.

I am also part of the senior management team within the Department, where I teach on postgraduate programmes and supervise postgraduate degree students. I also deliver management-training sessions and undertake consultancy work via the Manchester Food Centre in the area of food sustainability, food marketing and food supply chain management.

Other academic service (administration and management)

I have served as External Examiner and External Advisor on undergraduate and postgraduate programme validation panels in the United Kingdom and overseas.

Why study…

My interests are centred around the emerging science of planetary health; in particular, how food systems interact with planetary health and, in turn, impact human health and the natural systems on which it depends. Global food systems are dramatically affecting air quality, water quality, human exposure to infectious diseases, and the habitability of the places where humans live. Food is inextricably linked to concerns over three existential threats: from climate change; ecosystem collapse; and biodiversity loss. Here the literature is increasingly focused on finding transformational systems to avoid food insecurity and ultimately societal collapse.

Research outputs

My area of research expertise is food sustainability, specifically from the perspective of the food industry where the challenges of feeding a growing population with fewer resources remains a constant challenge. I am currently working with colleagues from a number of the UK’s leading universities on research focusing on the contribution that the food system makes to climate change, looking at the policy options, and what could be achieved by changes in consumption behaviour. Much of this research is designed to evaluate the complex relationship between sustainable food systems and the price of food.
