My profile

Biography

I am a Professor of Social Care in the Department of Social Care and Social Work, Faculty of Health and Education, Manchester Metropolitan University. I previously worked at the Hester Adrian Research Centre, University of Manchester, and at Lancaster University, and I was previously Co-Director of the the Public Health England Learning Disabilities Observatory.

Over the past 30 years my research interests have largely involved people with learning disabilities (people with intellectual disabilities is the phrase more commonly used internationally). Research projects have been wide-ranging, but have largely focused on documenting the inequaities experienced by people with learning disabilities, understanding the roots and consequences of these inequalities, and evaluating the impact of policies, services and interventions. Running through this work is the understanding that research is only one type of knowledge among many that are needed for social change, and getting research evidence into the hands of people and organisations working to make a difference is essential.

Interests and expertise

I mainly conduct research and knowledge mobilisation activities involving people with learning disabilities, using (with colleagues) a range of research methods.

Current areas of work include evaluating the quality and costs of social care services for people with learning disabilities, tracking the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on people with learning disabilities, evaluating access to and the effectiveness of psychological therapies for people with learning disabilities, and investigating the social, economic and health inequalities that people experience.
