Biography

Until September 2020 I was Principal Lecturer in Secondary Education in the Faculty of Education working primarily on postgraduate Secondary ITE programmes, including as Head of Secondary programmes (2010-19) and as lead and specialist History tutor on the PGCE Secondary History programme. From September 2019 I also had responsibilities as Head of International within the School for Teacher Education and Professional Development (STEP/D).I joined Manchester Metropolitan and the Faculty of Education in the 1990s as a Senior Lecturer and as lead for the PGCE Secondary History programme. Prior to joining the university I worked as a History/Head of History teacher in Secondary schools.

Throughout my time at the university I taught on a range of other undergraduate and postgraduate programmes (i.e. Primary Education, Applied Community Studies and Women Studies).

Committed to equality, inclusion and education for social justice I have always contributed to Equality initiatives within the Faculty. I am a member of the Faculty of Education’s Equality and Diversity team andco-founder of its recent Race and Diversity in Teaching and Research working group.

Whilst at the university I also worked as an Associate Lecturer with the Open University onits UG Arts and Humanities programmes (2003-11).

My main research interests relate to History Education (in particular, Historical Interpretations, Diversity & Post-colonial) and Secondary Initial Teacher Education.

I am currently engaged in doctoral research on teaching and learning about the history of British slavery in two post-colonial contexts (England and Jamaica).

From September, 2020, I remain affiliated to the University and the Faculty of Education, as a Visiting Teaching Fellow within ESRI and its research community. As such I continue to contribute to the Faculty’s work on race and diversity, and in particularto its ‘Race and Diversity in teaching and Research’ working group as co-chaired by Professor Kate Pahl, Dr. Diane Warner and Dr.Rajesh Patel.

Research outputs

My main research interests relate to History Education (inparticularHistorical Interpretations, Diversity & Post-colonial) and Secondary Initial Teacher Education. This has included international comparative work on ITE in History within the Council of Europe.

I am currently engaged in Doctoral research on teaching and learning about the history of British slavery in two post-colonial contexts (England and Jamaica): Secondary History Teachers’ ( and their pupils’ )perspectives.
