When you move into your accommodation at Manchester Met, it is important you familiarise yourself with the different facilities and services. 

You can find specific information for your accommodation below, including key collection points, your new address details, local doctor's and dental surgeries, laundry and recycling facilities and much more.

The Birley Student Living reception is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Mail will be delivered to the flat post boxes located in the communal entrance of each accommodation building. Parcels will be delivered to the Birley Student Living reception for you to collect. Proof of identify such as your university ID card is required to collect them.

Keys

On arrival, you will receive a post box key and access card for your room. If you lose any of these items, you will need to report it to the accommodation reception where a replacement key will be issued.

Please note, there will be a charge incurred of £10.00 to replace any lost or damaged keys and access cards.

Fire Evacuation

In the event of a fire alarm being raised you should evacuate promptly to the courtyard area of your accommodation block.

Failure to evacuate your accommodation building when instructed may result in disciplinary action being taken against you under the ‌.

If widespread evacuation is necessary, you will be instructed to move out of the accommodation courtyard.

If you hear the fire alarm sound in another flat, please inform security immediately. You are safe to remain in your own flat but may evacuate if you wish.

Bike Storage

There are 9 spaces available at Dunham/Vine located on the ground floor of Dunham Building.

There are 8 spaces available, located next to Dale 19.

There are 8 spaces available, located next to between Naylor 6 and 7. 

There are 8 spaces available, located between Warde 5 and 6.

Maintenance Repairs

Please report any maintenance issues to birleystudentliving@mmu.ac.uk. In an emergency, such as loss of all water or power, floods, gas leaks or persons trapped in lifts please go directly to the accommodation reception or telephone 0161 247 2777.

Drop-in sessions

If you would like a confidential drop-in session, contact your accommodation reception or alternatively email reslife@mmu.ac.uk.

Flat Inspections

You are responsible for keeping the communal areas of your flat and your bedroom clean and tidy.

All areas of your house/flat (including your bedroom) will be inspected once per term and the dates will be emailed to you. The inspection is to check for cleanliness, health and safety and damages. If an area of your home fails its inspection due to cleanliness, you will be given 48 hours to clean the area, after which a second inspection will be carried out. If your flat fails the second inspection, then a cleaning contractor will be brought in and the cost of this will be passed on to you and your flatmates.

Cleaning Equipment

There are shared living and kitchen facilities in Birley accommodation. Each apartment and townhouse is provided with a vacuum cleaner, dustpan and brush, mop and bucket, two recycling bins and two general waste bins.

Waste Recycling

You need to dispose of all rubbish from your flat at the recycling point of your accommodation building.

Laundry

Card operated washing machines and dryers are located in the Courtyards and next to reception located in Vine. Cards cost £2 to purchase, you can then top up online or via a machine. Laundry rooms are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

As a student living at Manchester Met you must register with a local doctor in order for you to receive treatment for any illness while you are at university.

Fire Evacuation

In Booth accommodation, there are two different stages to the fire alarms.

Acton, Byley, Chorlton, Duddon, Eaton and Goostrey buildings

If the alarm sounds within the central stairway, stay in your flat, close all doors and notify reception.

Booth Hall operates a ‘stay put’ policy. Flat and bedroom doors are fire doors and it is safer to stay in the flat than to enter a fire zone. The Fire Brigade will be notified of your presence. 

If the alarm sounds within your flat, you should evacuate promptly to the fire assembly point.

Hassall building

On hearing any alarm, you should evacuate promptly to the fire assembly point. 

Failure to evacuate your accommodation building when instructed may result in disciplinary action being taken against you under the Student Code of Conduct.

Bike Storage

There are forty spaces available, located in the central avenue opposite the Student Living reception. You can obtain a code to open the bike store from reception.

The Sat Nav postcode to follow is M15 6DP. Please approach the car park via Stretford Road and along Birchall Way which is immediately adjacent to Hulme Bridge.

During the year, there will be three inspections of your bedroom by a member of the accommodation team. You will be advised by email or a written note 24 hours beforehand of the time, date and purpose.

Cleaning Equipment

There are shared living and kitchen facilities in Briarfields. Each flat will be provided with a dustpan and brush, vacuum cleaner, iron and ironing board. 

Waste Recycling

You need to dispose of all rubbish from your flat at the recycling point located in Briarfields courtyard.

Laundry

Coin-operated washing machines and dryers are located next to Block C on the ground floor. Laundry rooms are open 7:00-21:00, 7 days a week.

  • Standby alarm – a fire detector outside the immediate vicinity has been activated. You are in no immediate danger and so there is no need as yet, to evacuate the building. If you are in bed, it is sensible to get up, get dressed and be ready to evacuate.

Daisy Bank

Getting to the halls of residence

  • Please head for the Daisy Bank Halls Car Park:

The building address is 67 Daisy Bank Rd, Manchester M14 5QD

By Car

  • You can approach the Halls from the A34 (Anson Road) or the A6 (Stockport Road)
  • Having travelled through the car park you will then arrive at the key collection point.
  • The driver will need to stay with the vehicle at all times and the student will be directed on foot to register and collect their keys. (If the driver wishes to collect keys with students they are advised to make a traffic marshal aware on entry to the car park so they can park in advance of the collection point).  The student will need to provide ID in order to collect keys, please ensure this is brought with you.
  • You will then be routed to the dedicated drop off points within internal courtyards where you will have 15 minutes to off load your belongings. Drivers should stay with their cars at all times.  Please ensure the vehicle is displaying the parking permit that is provided to you during key collection.
  • Upon completing your drop off you will be routed away from the Halls.

By Air

  • Manchester International Airport is approximately 9 miles from Daisy Bank .
  • There is also an express Rail Shuttle running approximately every 10 minutes from the Airport Station to Piccadilly Station. The halls can then be accessed by the 147 bus to the CMFT Hospital Boulevard and a further 15 minute walk. 

By Coach

  • Daisy Bank is a 40-minute walk from Manchester International Express Coach terminal on Chorlton Street. It is advised to head for the 147 bus to CMFT Boulevard and walk a further 5 mins to the halls.

By Rail

  • Manchester Piccadilly mainline station is 2 miles away from Daisy Bank Halls; it is walkable but if travelling with large luggage, a taxi is advisable – there is a taxi rank outside the station. Alternatively, head for the 147 bus to CMFT Boulevard and walk a further 5 mins to the halls.

Travel Pass

As a Daisy Bank resident, you will also receive a free bus travel pass. This allows you to travel by any Stagecoach Bus (including Magic buses) to the Manchester Campus. If you leave your accommodation early you will be required to return the travel pass. Failure to do so will result in you being charged for its replacement.

Flat Inspections

You are responsible for keeping the communal areas of your flat and your bedroom clean and tidy.

The communal area of your flat will be inspected every month and the dates will be advertised on the notice board in your flat. The inspection is to check for cleanliness, health and safety and damages. If your flat fails its inspection, you will be given 48 hours to clean the area, after which a second inspection will be carried out. If your flat fails the second inspection, then a cleaning contractor will be brought in and the cost of this will be passed on to you and your flatmates.

During the year, there will be three inspections of your bedroom by a member of the accommodation team. You will be advised by email or a written note 24 hours beforehand of the time, date and purpose.

Cleaning Equipment

There are shared living and kitchen facilities in Daisy Bank. Each shared kitchen will be provided with a dustpan and brush, mop and bucket, vacuum cleaner and storage cupboard for cleaning products.

Laundry

Coin-operated washing machines and dryers are located next to reception on the ground gloor. The laundry rooms are open 9:00-21:00, 7 days a week

As a student living at Manchester Met you must register with a local doctor in order for you to receive treatment for any illness while you are at university.

In the event of a fire alarm being raised you should evacuate promptly to the assembly point outside the Territorial Army building on Boundary Lane.

Failure to evacuate your accommodation building when instructed may result in disciplinary action being taken against you under the Student Code of Conduct.

If widespread evacuation is necessary, you will be instructed to move towards All Saints Park.
