ABOUT MY CAREER

I am currently in my first job since graduating, as an IT Officer at Calderdale Council.

I provide support to council employees in areas related to IT issues. I handle setting up devices for new starters according to the council’s policy and liaise with employees on issues preventing them from getting their job done.

The most used skill I gained from studying at Manchester Met in my career so far has been people relations. When I joined Manchester Met, I applied to be a student ambassador granting me the opportunity to work with many students, talk with them, both physically and virtually, in various settings. The communication and language skills I developed across my interactions really help me in my job now as my job involves a lot of customer service both physically and over the phone. Another skill I acquired was attention to detail. I worked with the estates department at Manchester Met and the ability to pay attention to detail is a skill that is of great benefit to me now as I must be attentive to user’s issues and provide solutions for them.

Since graduating, I’ve continued to develop my career with further training. I am currently undergoing the ITIL 4 which is a service desk training and certification that trains us in providing a quick turnaround service for council employees.

MY TOP TIP FOR STUDENTS IS

Apply, apply and apply some more. Don’t get discouraged if one or two places don’t offer you the job you are looking for. Go ahead and apply to other places, but while you are waiting, try picking up smaller jobs or some sort of training because the skills you will develop are always transferable and you can show your employer that you are willing to develop on your own initiative.

Also, I used the jobs4students portal. While I was still a student, I found several jobs through the portal and although I did not get a placement role, I was able to recommend the jobs4students portal to my friends and they were able to secure placement roles from there.

I’M INSPIRED BY

I am inspired by working purposefully. Knowing that I can offer assistance and support to users and make their work better inspires me a lot.

WHY I LOVE MANCHESTER MET

I loved the atmosphere, being around students at different phases of their education, working hard to be successful and making a positive impact on society.

I also loved the decor in certain areas of my campus. Because I worked with the estates team, I knew certain spots I could visit to have some quiet time. Those were very precious moments to me because I could get work done in a beautiful and inspiring environment.
