About my career

Straight after graduating I was offered a role at LADBible Group for their female-focused brand, Pretty52, now known as Tyla. I stayed there for a year and then moved onto Social Chain where I developed further knowledge into the digital online publishing industry

I secured the role by using my work experience unit to put on a full social media experiment at my part-time job as part of my university course - I held a tasting event for a new vegan menu at Zizzi’s former restaurant in Spinningfields, and it did so well that they even referenced me as ‘Zizzi Girl’ in my interview for LADBible!

I’m now Head of Social at a gaming and e-sports publication based in Manchester called GGRecon. I run the entire social media operations and help further our video/editorial and general engaging social media content to masses. My responsibilities require growing the social presence and ensuring we’re informing the audiences to the highest degree.

Sticking to deadlines, understanding the importance of networking, and staying up to date with the latest film and media news and trends has proven to be the most valuable skills I learnt at university. Also, during my time on my course, we did a journalism unit, which has absolutely helped shape my career path and trajectory.

I missed out on doing a placement as part of my degree, however, my part-time workplace allowed me to ‘create my own’ and put on a social media-marketed event.

My top tip for students

Get stuck into your environment and see how your degree can also shape your outside life too - always focus on what your intentions are for your career and ask yourself ‘will this action help me towards this goal’? If the answer is no, drop that and make sure you’re always prioritising what you need to achieve the goals you need.

I’m inspired by

I am inspired by women in gaming journalism, a previously male-dominated, and arguably still male-dominated profession. Women are proving day in and day out that they not only belong in the space, but can easily add value and diversity to shape the future gaming content of this generation.

I loved the expressive freedom, and the belief that we can truly achieve what we set our minds too from our tutors and course mentors at Manchester Met.
