  • Studied: BSc (Hons) Hotel and Catering Management

About my career

After graduating, I worked as a teacher in a language academy in Valladolid, Spain. I was teaching unemployed young people tourism English. I got the job because of my Hotel and Catering Management Degree.

I currently work as an Associate Professor teaching phonetics, general English and British culture at the University of Alcala de Henares.

In addition, I am the in-house English teacher in Inmunotek (a pharmaceutical company) and Smurfit Kappa’s Iberian headquarters.

I used the tourism knowledge gained at Manchester Met in the context of education. Every subject I was taught has come in useful at times, whether it was economics, law, human resources, statistics, or cooking as well as computing and accountancy skills.

My top tip for students

I did my placement year in The Holiday Inn Mayfair. The placement year is essential, especially in degrees like Hotel Business Management. On returning to the final year of the degree, we were all much more grown-up.

Learn languages during your degree and consider further studies such as short courses or a master’s degree.

I am inspired by people learning and enjoying when I teach them, even if the subject is difficult.
