About my career

I started a digital marketing agency, Fly High Media Ltd, in my first year at Manchester Met from my room in Victoria Halls. The business mainly focussed on website building, graphic design and social media management. In my second year at university I moved the agency into Innospace where I was able to develop it further.  Innospace is an excellent facility for a start-up business.  I based my agency in there for two years and it provided the necessary space to work, meet clients and network with other business owners.

After graduating, I began working full-time as managing director at Fly High Media Ltd, keeping a base in the heart of Manchester in Piccadilly Gardens, but moving the main office to Hooton in Cheshire.

Our main services are digital and search marketing with a special focus on search engine optimisation, pay-per-click and social media marketing. My main responsibilities include: securing new clients, client liaison, managing cash flow, hiring and managing staff, planning and managing projects. I also enjoy speaking at events, networking and blogging which helps bring in new business.

Studying for a BA (Hons) in Marketing Management gave me an excellent insight into all aspects of marketing and the skills required to successfully manage my own agency. In addition, I learned a lot about problem-solving, how to undertake research and write it up, team working, how to do presentations and manage projects. Doing the degree also helped to develop personal skills such as time management, personal resilience and confidence in my own abilities. 

My top tip for students

While at university, make the most out of every opportunity possible. I would recommend getting some hands-on work experience while at university. When you graduate, it is a competitive market and having good work experience on your CV does set you apart. To find positions, don’t be afraid to reach out directly to employers on LinkedIn or email. If you can, send links to employers of your past work as this shows them what you can do.

What I loved about Manchester Met

I loved meeting new people at university as well as having the support of some excellent academics who helped me complete my degree.
