About my career

I came to Manchester Met Business School through Clearing. I was originally going to study Wildlife and Environmental Biology at the University of Kent, but I was interested in Sport and Business and Manchester Metropolitan had a Sports Management Course with a good reputation, so I came here.

I went on a Placement year at ESPN whilst I was at university, and then went onto the BBC after graduating and then went on to become a Social Media Executive at Manchester City FC.

Working and volunteering whilst I was at university was helpful and made me stand out from the crowd after I graduated. Most employers are interested in what you have done before, and when I went to job interviews, they always took a keen interest in the volunteering section on my CV.

Every day is different at Manchester City. There are always several ‘tick box’ tasks such as postings on social media, but then you have to accommodate visitors and cover events such as us having the Duke of Edinburgh visit last week, as well as having Kevin Hart and Ice Cube visit a few weeks ago. On a match day, there are lots of things to be doing, like interacting with your audience members.

My degree has benefitted my career in teaching me how to research. If your manager asks you to do a project- for example at the moment I’m looking into how we can work with social media platforms such as Snapchat and WhatsApp - it all requires research, and that’s something what the university has taught me.

My top tip for students is

Volunteer. Go out there and get relevant experience. Then make sure you use that experience to show employers why you’re the best candidate and why they should hire you instead of somebody else. I kept a journal when I volunteered, and I always updated my LinkedIn.

Who inspires me

I do not want to draw attention to one name in particular as there has been many people who have guided me, but Steve Mansfield has been incredible. He was the head lecturer for Sports Management and kept in touch during our gap year.

I love Manchester Met because

It’s the people that you meet on the course, not just the academics, but the friends you keep in touch with- they end up as important connections in the industry.
