"My degree in Fashion Buying gave me an understanding of all aspects of the buying process"
About my career

My degree in Fashion Buying gave me an understanding of all aspects of the buying process, making me aware of the job roles before I secured a job. My degree was very specific to the fashion industry, especially buying and, as a recent graduate, I have found that what I learnt from my final year project and fashion buying module have benefitted me in my career so far.

I got the position at River Island by applying online and taking part in an interview process. Before this, I did a year’s placement at JD Williams as part of my degree. This was an important turning point for me as it opened my eyes to a real working environment in the career I wanted to pursue. It also helped to cement my decision that fashion buying was the career path I wanted to follow. Prospective employers were impressed with my experience from my placement, which helped me during interviews.

Coming from a small town and moving to a big city enabled me to take part in different activities that encouraged me to talk to new people.  At MMU I learnt to co-operate and communicate effectively in the workplace as I now communicate with suppliers, colleagues and other departments every day.

My top tip for students is…

Keep trying! And do look at every avenue. While I did apply via the conventional recruitment methods, I also used social media to my advantage. I contacted recruitment teams directly on Linkedin. I also used a blog throughout my last year of university and linked this to my CV. Not only did this tell future employers I was interested in the fashion industry (it was a fashion blog) but it also gave them an insight to me and my skills and experience.

I’m inspired by…

Maria Malone. She was always there for advice and support: she is an asset to the University.
