"My undergraduate degree gave me a greater insight into the way that businesses operate"
While studying my BA (Hons) in Business, I was already working for RBS. After I graduated, my first role was in the global restructuring group there. My undergraduate degree gave me a greater insight into marketing and the way that businesses operate. Studying at MMU allowed me to go on and attain my management accountant qualifications ACMA with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. It gave me the grounding to become a management accountant, which then allowed me to set up my own business.
I was the co-founder and MD of a peer to peer lender Assetz Capital. Peer to peer is a new form of finance that removes the need for banks. We lended to SMEs and property developers who have been neglected by traditional lenders. Having launched in April 2013, we funded over £30m of loans for businesses in the UK.
Nothing in my degree was irrelevant. If you think marketing has no place in what you want to do, or that HR law is not your bag, think again.
Go and do placements and get experience in the subject you are looking for even if it is just for a couple of weeks: the more that you can add to your CV, the better!
During my degree, I did a project on team management working with Richard Sandover. He really helped me to understand how people interact with each other and how to go about building a team - skills that have been beneficial in my career development to date.
The staff were always willing to help and work with – I enjoyed everything about my degree!
