"Above all, I developed a greater confidence in my own capabilities"
About my career

I was at a point in my career where I had built up some good experience in HR, training and general management but I found that in order to secure a professional HR role, I needed further study at postgraduate level, so I could go on to become a Chartered Member of the CIPD. While I was studying part-time at MMU, I started working as a Change Manager for a large City Council that was undergoing major transformational change. I feel the fact that I was studying the Human Resource Management course at postgraduate level helped me secure that role.

My HRM postgraduate qualification, combined with my professional experience and CIPD Chartership, allowed me to tackle more complex projects, operate at a more strategic level and ultimately helped me move on to my current role overseas. I have received project management training, specialist training in organisational design and some internal management and leadership development programmes since graduating, and I now work for the Australian Red Cross Blood Service as a Senior Organisation Development Consultant. I have found that it is important to be able to take a model or academic theory, and be able to make it apply to a real way forward – to make sure people don’t just switch off!

My top tip for students is…

A lot of graduates get the feedback that they ‘need more experience’. Luckily, I was working in a role that gave me that, during my studies. But if you’re not in that position, I’d suggest voluntary work or extra project work that will stretch your CV experience. Voluntary work is also good to build your profile - you never know who you will meet!

I’m inspired by…

I felt inspired by the people on my program who worked full-time, who had families or other commitments and still focused on their studies and gained their qualification. All of the staff, in their own way, inspired me – to be surrounded by people who were so knowledgeable and passionate is very inspiring.

Why I love Manchester Met

My time at MMU taught me much more than technical HR skills - I learnt about teamwork, resilience and above all, I developed a greater confidence in my own capabilities.
