"The career days at MMU helped me to begin carving out my career path before graduating"
I'd always loved reading but it wasn't until taking English Literature at A level that I developed a real passion for the study of the written word. I'd looked at other Humanities subjects such as History and Sociology, but felt that going on to higher education to study English would combine a lot of these elements and so I decided to apply to for the BA (Hons) in English and Creative Writing at MMU.
During my studies I secured a two-week placement at a publishing house in London. This definitely gave me some great experience in marketing and helped me to realise the direction I wanted my career to head in. The career days at MMU helped me to begin carving out my career path before graduating, especially the faculty crossover day between the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Business and Law. It prepared me to start looking at work placements or internships that would get me to where I wanted to be.
The degree gave me the ability to sift through information, argue my case and write comprehensively and persuasively. The combination of my placement at the publishers, a part-time job within the Marketing Department at MMU, and the knowledge of how to create interesting and creative copy, helped me to secure my current role as a Social Media Assistant.
Be open to the idea of short work placements within the industry that you want to work in and show your passion for it! Be interested in industry news and keep on top of new developments - this could give you the edge during an interview or graduate open day. Also, don’t forget that time keeping, organisation and brushing up on your basic IT skills are a given within a digital role.
My dissertation tutors really championed me and my writing and spurred me on to achieve a First in my dissertation. Reading the career history of some English graduates who were working within social media and marketing also helped spur me onto that career path – something I can now do as a graduate!
