About my career

Being a Manchester Metropolitan University alumna has enabled me to achieve the career advancement I have dreamed of. The BA (Hons) in Advertising and Brand Management taught me vital industry skills such as strategic planning, marketing analysis and SEO development. I learnt how to network efficiently and present to large audiences. These skills gave me the confidence to go out and complete a variety of internships including five in my final year. Not only did the internships allow me to put my education into practice, but they also helped me to acquire a range of contacts to build up my professional network.

After my undergraduate degree, I then went on to complete an MSc in International Public Relations. With support from the University’s Careers and Employability Service, combined with my industry experience, I successfully secured my first graduate job as a Marketing Executive at Renewable Planet. I have subsequently furthered my career by completing a range of Google AdWords exams, signing up to a Photoshop course and setting up a freelance business alongside my current role at urbanbubble. In the future, I would like to use the skills from my degree and industry experience to turn my freelance business into a full time marketing agency.

My top tip for students is…

Take as many internship opportunities as you can to build up your experience and professional network. Make sure that you get a reference and ask them to recommend you on LinkedIn upon completion. Drop them an email every now and then after you have finished – who knows, in the future they could be your clients.

I’m inspired by…

Both Senior Lecturer (Public Relations) Mel Powell and Senior Lecturer (Management) Jane Tonge. Mel always went the extra mile, made time for you out of hours and genuinely cared. Jane wanted you to truly succeed rather than just pass the course, pushing you until you got the grade that you desired (and possibly thought you would never achieve).

Why I love Manchester Met

All of the lecturers are extremely helpful and are willing to guide you, build your confidence and help you succeed.
