"The time spent at Manchester Metropolitan was one of the most cherished and valuable periods of my life"
About my career

Studying at Manchester Metropolitan gave me the tools to grow and develop my skills as a Designer, providing me the freedom to explore and learn about all the industries processes and machinery; the lecturers and facilities at Manchester Metropolitan University are first rate. During my degree, I went to work for Shop Direct Group, Littlewoods and Very, Editd and Draw in Light. I think that it is an invaluable experience to undertake a placement, providing the essential skills to work in the industry, working in a team environment.

As a business owner, I see first-hand how valuable the ability to look at processes and carefully formulating ideas for sustainable routes or sources are in the industry. I would highly recommend students studying fashion and apparel courses take the time to practise these skills, as they will stand them in good stead against other new designers when they graduate.

Madia & Matilda is a unique luxury clothing label, specialising in upcycled and sustainable fabrics. I founded the businesses in 2013 after working within the industry for retailers and designers, such as Mary Katrantzou in Paris. I draw upon the experience from my time at university often, and feel that they have helped to shape my future and business approach.

My top tip for students is…

Never give up, determination and dedication can go a long way. Working hard can open many doors, however in order to progress you must be very strong willed and eager to learn.

I’m inspired by…

Throughout my time at university and through my working career, I have been very fortunate to have fantastic and inspirational lecturers and mentors – to many to list! - who have pushed me to achieve more than I could have ever imagined. I wish to thank particularly Senior Lecturer in Fashion Amanda Langdown, and Della Nelson, Head of Women’s Wear Design for Very, Littlewoods and ISME.

Why I love Manchester Met

The time spent at Manchester Metropolitan was one of the most cherished and valuable periods of my life: it enabled me to grow and develop as a designer and explore all aspects of design.
