"Manchester Met was not only a great social experience for me, it also gave me a great basis for my start on the career ladder."
Studying at Manchester Metropolitan University gave me a great basis on pattern work, which I was able to develop throughout my career. Manchester Met also allowed me to look at a range of areas including ladies’, men’s and children’s wear, giving me flexibility when approaching a career in the fashion industry. On a personal level, the University helped me to be more confident and social, skills which are needed when working within any teams and your colleagues.
The BA (Hons) in Clothing Design and Technology covered so many areas within the fashion industry; it helped me to decide which area I wanted to go into. My degree was also a sandwich course, where I spent a year working in industry as an assistant garment technologist. I believe this experience supported me in getting a job straight out of university.
In my previous role at Matalan, I specialised in children’s clothing working as a garment technologist. I went down this route as it involves having a lot of attention to detail! I focussed on fit, safety and quality particularly in both the children’s nightwear area and the baby clothing area. Developing patterns, consistent size charts and blocks has allowed me to strip the sampling process right back, in turn saving time and money. I successfully won a Draper’s 30 Under 30 Award for this work at Matalan.
At Boohoo.com I manage a team of 25, working across the Boohoo and Nasty Gal brands. It’s great working for a successful company and being able to grow such a young team.
Be confident and be flexible! Absorb as much information as you can! There are so many different routes you can go down in the fashion industry – gaining as much experience as you can, both inside and outside of university, will be beneficial.
I have been pushed a lot by my team members to develop myself and work hard to absorb as much information as I can. There is a lot of knowledge within the industry that has been shared with me and I am very appreciative of this.
Manchester Met was not only a great social experience for me, it also gave me a great basis for my start on the career ladder.
