About

Our research focuses on the production and characterisation of novel materials and the modification of surfaces for a wide range of applications.

We generate insights into materials and processes, and use that knowledge to develop new applications, components and devices with novel or enhanced properties — supporting economic and social development in the North West, across the UK and internationally.

We work at the interface of engineering, chemistry, physics, biology and surface science. Materials science acts as the common link binding these diverse subjects together.

Our research brings together a multidisciplinary group of researchers with world-leading experts in:

  • advanced functional materials and catalysis
  • advanced manufacturing through 2D and 3D printing
  • biosensors
  • electrochemistry
  • microbiology at interfaces
  • nanotechnology
  • sports engineering
  • surface engineering
  • wearable technologies

The two aspects of our research are interdependent — advanced materials often depend on surface engineering techniques for production. As a result, our research provides unique opportunities for collaboration across the materials, engineering, chemistry and surface science fields. And we’re increasingly working with other sectors on novel applications, such as with the fashion industry on wearable technologies.

We also have strong relationships with academic groups around the world. The applied nature of much of our research ensures strong industrial support and collaboration.

Within the University, we work closely with the Manchester Fuel Cell Innovation Centre and PrintCity.
