Build a team of highly effective health and social care management professionals at your organisation.

This new route has been developed by the University, in close collaboration with NHS trusts, local authorities and other healthcare providers. It will support your participants to take a leading role in driving improvements in the delivery of care, and to understand the strategic challenges facing the NHS and wider health and care delivery. 

The accelerated two-year programme has been designed to recognise the significant previous experience of many in the health and social care sector. It will give your staff the chance to achieve a BA (Hons) Business Management Professional bachelors degree and professional accreditation with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).

Who is the programme for?

The programme is designed for applicants who are operating in roles that have a relationship with the delivery of care. This can include those directly delivering care or people who work in a management role supporting and/or influencing frontline services.

Programme Content

The programme is co-delivered by the University’s Faculty of Health, Psychology and Social Care, and the Business School, combining cutting-edge management theory with a practical understanding of health and social care.

The early units provide an introduction to strategic leadership, and operational thinking in the context of Health and Social Care. Apprentices will be encouraged to demonstrate how they can apply these skills and best practice at work.  

Later units explore the key principles for effective management in social care, as well as equipping managers with the skills to successfully manage change in a rapidly evolving healthcare environment.

Apprentices will reconcile their learning with a substantial work-based project and through the creation of a portfolio, demonstrating the ways in which they have continually applied their knowledge directly to the context of your organisation.

Delivery Model

Apprentices study a core curriculum across two years, with approximately 12 University days per year. These days are delivered on a day-release model, in clusters of three days every six weeks.

Teaching is delivered on-site at the Business School and the Brooks Building in the heart of Manchester with efficient transport links across England. Delivery uses a combination of lectures, workshops, seminars and personal tutoring. University days are scheduled to avoid school holidays wherever possible.

Apprentices will also be expected to spend additional time on self-study, development opportunities and tutor-supported online learning. University tutors and academics will conduct regular reviews, ensuring one-to-one support is also provided for each apprentice. 

Final Degree Award

At the end of the two-year programme, successful graduates will receive a BA (Hons) Business Management Professional (executive) degree and professional recognition as Chartered Managers and Members of the Chartered Management Institute (CMgr MCMI).  

Entry Requirements

There are a number of entry routes available for participants wishing to join the programme. All of these require applicants to be able to evidence prior skills and knowledge development to satisfy entry on to this executive degree apprenticeship.

Scenario 1

  • A first degree (not in a management discipline), or
  • An HND, DipHE, Foundation Degree or other level 5 qualification equivalent in breadth and depth to 2 years of full time (Honours) degree study. A Level 5 ILM or CMI Diploma in leadership and management is considered to be equivalent for entry to this programme.
  • All applicants also need to have at least two to three years management experience.

Scenario 2

  • Level 5 qualifications of less breadth to those detailed above (such as a CMI or ILM Level 5 Award or Certificate), or
  • An HNC, CertHE or other level 4 qualification equivalent in breadth and depth to 1 year of full time (Honours) degree study.
  • All applicants also need to have at least two to three years management experience.
  • Applicants will need to successfully complete an additional task as a condition of entry.

Scenario 3

Candidates whose highest level of qualification does not meet the above criteria will need a minimum of 5-10 years’ experience in a senior/strategic management position, and will need to successfully complete an additional task as a condition of entry.

All applicants must have Level 2 (GCSE) Maths and English grades A*-C, or acceptable equivalents, or must commit to completing this alongside the programme.


Employers with a payroll in excess of £3 million will be subject to the Apprenticeship Levy and any funds paid out can be used to fund participation in apprenticeship programmes. Employers with a payroll below £3 million are eligible for funding, which will cover at least 95% of the cost of apprenticeship programmes.
