Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship

for Apprentice Students

If you have aspirations of working in a management role or developing your career as a manager, then the Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship could be your next step.

The programme, designed in collaboration with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), and regional and national employers, provides the knowledge and skills you will need to become a confident management professional.

The BA (Hons) Business Management Professional, studied as part of the apprenticeship, is designed to complement your role in the workplace, enabling you to apply your learning and make an impact from the very beginning. Specialist pathways in Hospitality, Fashion and Retail Management, allow you to develop the specialist knowledge to manage in these industry sectors.

Successful apprentices will also have the opportunity to achieve Chartered Manager (CMgr) status, the gold standard for the profession.

What You Will Study

You will study a core curriculum that focuses on organisational performance, personal effectiveness, and project and transferable skills. You will also take part in workshops to develop communication, presentation and team working skills. Units for all apprentices include:

  • Managing Customer and Stakeholder Relations
  • Managing and Leading People
  • Finance and Accounting for Managers
  • Project Management
  • Work-Based Projects
  • Business Portfolio

Other Units and Industry Pathways in Hospitality and Retail

The other programme units cover the following topics: 

  • Dynamic Business and Digital Context
  • Sales and Marketing
  • Operations and Technology Management
  • Strategy, Digital and Leadership

If you are studying a specialist industry pathway, the teaching of these units is tailored for your sector, such as Hospitality or Retail.

Fashion Pathway

If you are studying the fashion pathway, your degree programme includes the following specialist units: 

  • Product Development
  • Buying and Merchandising
  • Fashion Promotion
  • Product Lifecycle Management

Programme Delivery

The programme is taught at Manchester Metropolitan University’s Business School for approximately 25 days each year. You will attend for an induction week, followed by teaching blocks of two to three days, five or six times each year.

The taught units are complemented by negotiated work-based projects, where whenever possible you will be able to use business challenges and scenarios from your own role as part of your work. You will also have regular updates with your university tutor, in person, on the phone and via video chat.

In the workplace, a mentor will support you and liaise with the university tutor to ensure you quickly develop the skills required for successful management.

You will be a full-time employee, earning a minimum salary of £12,000 per year. Please check individual job adverts for full details of pay and conditions or talk your current employer about your own situation.

The Degree Award

You will graduate with a BA (Hons) Business Management Professional and if you are studying a sector specific pathway your degree will reflect your industry expertise, for example, BA (Hons) Business Management Professional in Hospitality.

Successful apprentices will also have the opportunity to apply for CMI Chartered Manager (CMgr) status and will receive a CMI Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership.

Entry Requirements

Candidates for the Degree Apprenticeship should have a minimum of 104-112 points at A2 (Grades BCC) or an equivalent e.g. BTEC DMM. You will also require Maths and English Language GCSE grade A*-C. We will individually evaluate candidates who do not meet these requirements, but have workplace experience.

What sort of job role will I be undertaking?

You could be working a variety of general business/management/operational roles in a wide range of organisations from small independent businesses in the Manchester region to large banks, retailers, hospitality establishments, government departments or multinational blue chip organisations.


Are there any age restrictions?

No. People of any age can join the apprenticeship. 

Can international students apply?
