Meet point: Outside Manchester Metropolitan Special Collections (Map) @ 17:30 | Sketchcrawl, led by Dr Jonathan Foyle begins at 18:15 after an exclusive introduction to the 'Ruskin's Manchester: "Devil's Darkness" to Beacon City' exhibition by it’s curator Dr Rachel Dickinson.

Join the team behind The John Ruskin Prize, visual literacy charity The Big Draw and architectural historian, broadcaster, artist, heritage site advocate and member of The John Ruskin Prize 2019 selection panel: Dr Jonathan Foyle for this drawn exploration of Manchester’s architectural gems!

Our multi-site sketch crawl will take in different aspects of the city's architectural landmarks in chronological order from Victorian Gothic to Art Deco with a brief intro to each while you sketch, including: The Portico Library, Manchester's present Town Hall, The John Ryland’s Library and Lutyens' Midland Bank.

Ruskin believed that drawing helps us see the world more clearly and makes us aware of it’s beauty and fragility. This sketchcrawl is for everyone interested in walking, gawking, Manchester, Gothic architecture, learning new things and meeting new people! The drawing is for those who love to do it as well as those who think they can’t!

Despite John Ruskin and Manchester getting off to a rocky start, troubled by the pollution and poor working conditions he found there in the 19th century, he would come to have a strong association with the city and influence the changes that took place to address such issues.

We hope after our sketchcrawl you’ll come to regard Manchester’s unique architecture with the same fondness that Ruskin viewed Venice!
