The Lapsed Clubber Histories Map: The Launch

Although Manchester and its popular music are famous around the globe, little is known about the communities that helped build the city’s reputation. Greater Manchester’s rave culture has been referenced in print, films, TV and theatre but almost always from the perspective of the well-known expert insider. Now is our chance to tell our own story.

Over the last 18 months, The Lapsed Clubber Project has worked with Manchester Digital Music Archive and Heritage Lottery Funding to produce The Lapsed Clubber Audio Map with input from the same raving community that shaped Manchester during the 1985-1995 rave era.

The launch of the map, which allows users to browse fellow ravers’ reminiscences and leave their own memories. Come along for the official launch of the map plus a panel discussion about the era and the importance of rave culture for Greater Manchester followed by a celebration!

The panellists will include:

Dr Beate Peter – a self-proclaimed Lapsed Clubber and our project lead. Beate is a social researcher at Manchester Met who wants to find out what it means to grow up and grow old with rave culture. Having tested the dance floors in Berlin during her undergraduate studies, she has settled in Manchester, a city whose relationship with raves and club culture she continues to explore.

Abigail Ward - an award-winning curator, writer & DJ with over fifteen years' experience in the music industry and cultural sector. She specialises in Greater Manchester music history; music and disability; and LGBT+ music culture. She is a co-founder of Manchester Digital Music Archive.

Dr Fiona Cosson - an historian of modern Britain with particular expertise in oral history; local, regional, community and public history and heritage; and the history of community, neighbourhood and belonging.

John McCready - a former Hacienda DJ- John was resident for 5 years in the Gay Traitor bar. He also wrote for NME, The Face, Mojo, Word, Radio Times and Mixmag. He now teaches Journalism, Cultural Studies and Music Production at Salford University and BIMM Manchester.

The Lapsed Clubber Project is a Heritage Lottery Funded Project based at Manchester Metropolitan University and run by Dr Beate Peter in partnership with Manchester Digital Music Archive.

Manchester Digital Music Archive is an online community archive established in 2003 to celebrate Greater Manchester music and its social history. It is a registered charity led by volunteers.
