Congratulations to Manchester Met graduate Hilary Menos who is a winner of the 2019 Poetry Business International Book and Pamphlet Competition prize.

The poetry prize is awarded to new and outstanding poetry titles selected by Neil Astley (of Bloodaxe), Michael Schmidt (of Carcanet) and Amy Wack (of Seren).

In 2019, Manchester Metropolitan University's Professor of Contemporary Poetry & Creative Director of the Manchester Writing School, Carol Ann Duffy said:

"The Poetry Business is undoubtedly among the most important initiatives in UK literature, bar none"

This year's winners were: S. K. Kim, for her collection Notes from the North; Hilary Menos, for her collection Human Tissue; Nick On, for his collection Zhou Emma Simon, for her collection The Odds

Hilary Menos is one of the successful graduates of our MA in Creative Writing (Poetry route). Her book will be published as part of this prize.

The judges said about Menos' work:

"There is a genuine pressure of content in the best of these skilfully managed and imaginatively engaged poems. The evidently real life story as it unfolds is quietly told and affecting. This is an outstanding collection, because of its material and also because of its openness and artistry. It is a worthy winner and one that many people will engage with and appreciate."

- Neil Astley, Michael Schmidt & Amy Wack

The winners will feature in the next issue of The North magazine published in August.

Their four winning pamphlets will be launched in February 2020 at The Wordsworth Trust in
Grasmere, and are available to pre-order from the website.

The 2020 International Book & Pamphlet Competition will open for entries in October 2019.
