Manchester Met Geographers at the RGS-IBG Conference

Manchester Met Geographers attended this year’s Royal Geographical Society – Institute of British Geographers (RGS-IBG) Annual Conference, with both staff and PhD students presenting seven papers and involved in organising two conference tracks.

Attended by delegates from around the world, the RGS-IBG is Britain’s main conference for the Geography discipline. MMU’s presence at the conference reflects the quality and range of international research undertaken in Geography.

James Cheng presented a paper on Environmental injustice: Inequities in perceived environmental health risks and interventions in a fast developing country. James and Tim Edensor presented a joint paper on Spatial (re)production and middle class remaking: Jiaoyufication in Nanjing, China, James and Tim also co-organised sessions on Geography beyond the West: Understanding the Urbanisation in China.

PhD Candidate Jamie Halliwell presented Being an insider researcher within Eurovision Song Contest fandom: Challenges within online and offline spaces in a Postgraduate Forum.

Jonathan Keen and Callum Thomas  presented a paper on Sustainable Aviation; Assessing the viability of a novel compensation scheme for those worst affected by airport operations to help facilitate aviation growth. Jonathan is a former undergraduate student in Geography at MMU.

Steve Millington presented findings from a recent research project undertaken for the City Football Group: Embedding, Disembedding and Re-embedding Manchester City.  Steve also co-organised two sessions on Brands and Being: Elision with literal and figurative landscapes and Coproducing understandings of place.

Samantha Wilkinson also presented two papers: The Lived Experiences of Caring for People with Dementia in their own Homes and Young Men’s Careful and Careless Drinking Geographies.

The conference was also attended by Hannah Neate, acting in her role as Treasurer of the Historical Geography Research Group of the RGS.

Finally two PhD Candidates Gail Skelly and Rong Huang were attending their first international academic conference in Geography, gaining valuable insight into the latest research in the discipline, which will assist their own projects and personal development.

The RGS-IBG 2018 will take place at Cardiff University from 28-31st August.
