Dr Kathryn Chadwick

Kathryn Chadwick, BA (Hons), PhD, has worked in Higher Education for 31 years (The Open University, Edge Hill University, Liverpool John Moores University and Manchester Metropolitan University.)  Kathryn gained her PhD in 1996 from the Open University, entitled: “Out of the Darkness Into Light”: A Critical Evaluation Of Scottish Prison Reorganisation for Long Term Imprisonment 1998 To The Present.  Using primary research with long term, male prisoners in Scotland, the study focused on the impact of policy changes and new initiatives on both the Prison Service and the experiences of men serving long sentences in Scotland’s prisons. 

Kathryn has considerable experience in designing, delivering, leading and assessing Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses.  Additionally, she has delivered seminars, training and conference presentations to a wide range of audiences, both academic and non-academic.  She was a co founder of the Centre for Studies in Crime and Social Justice at Edge Hill University, which incorporated Masters and PhD programmes and eventually the first ever degree in Critical Criminology.  Following a career break to look after her two young sons, Kathryn joined MMU in 2009.  Since then she has led numerous modules including: Understanding Criminology; Youth in Crisis; Crime, Deviance and Control; Politics of Crime and Community; Crime, Criminology and Criminal Justice; The Politics of Imprisonment adn Penal Punishment.  Additionally she has coordinated Sociology undergraduate dissertations; coordinated post graduate degrees within the Department; been a member of the Faculty Research Degrees Committee; a member of the department’s retention team, and Criminology Subject Leader.  She also successfully introduced the new MA in Criminology in 2010 and has responsibility for the management of this programme.

Kathryn has published extensively in Criminology texts and journals and has been involved in numerous research projects.  She also has considerable experience of externality, acting as either an External Examiner; External Panel Member on Course Validations and Reviews and as a PhD external examiner.  This includes working at: Bolton University; The University of Derby, Leeds Metropolitan University, the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside, Guildford University, Westminster University; Salford University and Queens University Belfast.
