My profile

Biography

With more than 30 years’ experience in newspapers, magazines and publishing, I am passionate about teaching the journalists of the future.

I trained on the Westminster Press Diploma in Journalism in 1992 and became a trainee reporter on the weekly Westmorland Gazette in the Lake District. Since then I have worked as a staff reporter and editor with major newspaper group Newsquest while my freelance journalism has appeared in many publications, including the Daily Telegraph, the Guardian, the Daily Express, the Daily Mail and Metro newspaper.

Today I continue to work as a freelance journalist and also as an author.

My true crime book The Jigsaw Murders: The True Story of the Ruxton Killings and the Birth of Modern Forensics (The History Press) was longlisted for the 2022 Crime Writers’ Association Gold Dagger for Non-Fiction. It has been optioned for television by Elaine Collins, the producer behind ITV’s Vera and the BBC’s Shetland.

I am writing a new true crime book, The Lady in the Lake, based on a murder I covered as a reporter in the 1990s. Its due to be published by Mirror Books in 2024.

I first worked at MMU as an associate lecturer in autumn 2015, before joining the teaching staff full time in spring 2016.

Over the years I have seen seismic changes in the way news is reported and now I want to help inspire the next generation of newsgatherers.

These days journalists in all fields are truly multimedia specialists, writing for print, online and social media while also producing podcasts and video reports. I hope to share my personal experience of this exciting new landscape with MMU’s Multimedia Journalism students.

Away from work I enjoy walking and spending time with my family. I am an avid reader and enjoy watching football.
