About our research

About our research

People are living longer than ever but many still spend a significant number of their later years in poor health.

Common conditions affecting the elderly include:

  • inflammatory-related illnesses

  • dementia

  • diabetes

  • chronic diseases

  • general frailty

As the numbers of older people continue to rise, addressing age-related health conditions and their mechanisms is a major societal challenge. And healthy ageing is a priority policy area for the World Health Organisation and governments across the globe.

Our approach

We use a systems biology approach to investigate molecular, cellular and physiological mechanisms across the lifespan.

Our research within the field of ageing from early life to old age is broad and cross-disciplinary. With a particular focus on inflammatory-related conditions, diabetes and cancer, we are applying population genetics, genomics and epigenetics alongside in vitro and in vivo studies to better understand how genes interact with lifestyle and the environment to influence healthy ageing and program risk for the development of disease.

We work with chemists within the theme and industries as part of a translational approach towards developing therapies.
