‘Women’s Legal Landmarks: Celebrating the history of women and law in the UK and Ireland’

Lecture Theatre 1, Brooks Building

The Women's Legal Landmarks project commemorates the centenary of women's admission in 1919 to the legal profession in the UK and Ireland by identifying key ‘legal landmarks’ in women's legal history.

The project brings together feminist lawyers, historians, activists and legal practitioners to produce an online database and book detailing the key legal events that have been – and continue to be – significant in women’s struggle for justice and equality. Over 80 authors write about landmarks that represent a significant achievement or turning point in women's engagement with law and law reform.

Women’s Legal Landmarks spans eleven centuries, and covers topics as diverse as divorce reform, the right to vote, grassroots protests, prostitution, equal pay, the ordination of women bishops, prostitution, surrogacy and assisted reproduction, rape, domestic violence, FGM, abortion, image-based sexual abuse, as well as the life stories of women who were the first to undertake key legal roles and positions.

The landmarks have been brought together in the book Women's Legal Landmarks: Celebrating the history of women and law in the UK and Ireland.

To celebrate the publication of Women’s Legal Landmarks, the Sylvia Pankhurst Centre for Gender and Diversity hosts Professor Erika Rackley, editor of the Women’s Legal Landmarks project, and authors of selected landmarks – including Dr Kay Lalor and Dr Annapurna Waughray of Manchester Law School/ Sylvia Pankhurst Centre for Gender and Diversity - to discuss the project, the landmarks and feminist law reform.

Join us on the 6th December 2-4pm, BR G.78 - Lecture Theatre 1, Brooks Building, Manchester Metropolitan University.

This event is open to researchers, activists, students and everyone else interested in women’s rights.
