Decent Work and Productivity Research Centre Launch Event
Manchester Metropolitan University Business School
Join us for the launch of the Decent Work and Productivity Research Centre with guest keynotes from Mayor Andy Burnham and Professor Damian Grimshaw (International Labour Organisation).
Decent Work and Productivity at Manchester Metropolitan University is a new University Centre of Research and Knowledge Exchange dedicated to bringing together leading researchers in the field of employment.
We address two key contemporary concerns in modern societies. The first is around the quality of people’s working lives: questions of security, pay, equality, work-life balance and representation. The second is around the productivity of workers, organisations and economies. We see these issues as linked, and our central purpose is to explore these links and promote change.
The Centre engages with a wide range of organisations and policy-makers to conduct world-leading research on the forces that shape decent work and work productivity. Our expertise draws on years of research in human resource management, organisational behaviour, small business and entrepreneurship, gender and diversity.
This launch event will be an exciting opportunity to debate contemporary challenges in the world of work, find out about our research, and help shape our future research agenda. The event will be of interest to a broad range of people with an interest in the world of work – for example: policy makers, HR professionals, trade unionists, researchers – and presents an excellent opportunity to build connections with leading figures in these fields.
Andy Burnham is Mayor of Greater Manchester. Elected in May 2017, the Mayor steers the work of Greater Manchester’s Combined Authority (GMCA) and represents the people of all its 10 boroughs. Prior to his election, Andy Burnham was MP for Leigh, with notable positions in government including Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, and Health Secretary.
Professor Damian Grimshaw is Director of the Research Department at the International Labour Organisation (ILO). He is also Professor of Employment studies at Manchester Business School and Director of EWERC (European Work and Employment Research Centre).
‘Decent Work’ is a key consideration in the ILO’s 2019 report Work for a Brighter Future, which draws on some of Damian’s work. It seems pertinant to have Professor Grimshaw help launch the Centre, particularly in the ILO’s centenary year.
