Who am I?
Javier is a Senior Lecturer in Marketing and Consumer Behaviour based at the Manchester Metropolitan University Business School, where he is affiliated to the Business Transformations Research Centre and the Institute of Place Management. His research interests are wide-ranging and lie at the intersection of marketing, critical perspectives, and consumer culture. His work has been published in highly regarded scholarly journals, including Marketing Theory and the Journal of Macromarketing.
Javier’s teaching spans across a range of units within both Marketing and Retail Apprenticeships. He is convinced that marketing is much more than a commercial activity, particularly in light of the wider impacts of marketing activities on the natural environment and society. This has led him to develop an approach which is overtly multidisciplinary and integrates insights from other disciplinary areas, including sustainability, ethics, psychology, economics, or gender studies, to name a few.
How I’ll teach you
Javier is convinced that marketers’ ability to navigate the complex business environment of the future is tantamount to their ability to engage with cutting-edge research, combined with critical thinking skills. He also believes that learning is a collective rather than an individual process. Therefore, Javier's teaching is informed by his research, focusing on activities that facilitate student engagement, debate, critical thinking, and reflexivity.
