An internship is a period of work experience offered by an employer to give students and graduates exposure to the working environment, often within a specific industry, which relates to their field of study. Internships can be as short as a week or as long as 12 months. The majority are for up to three months and paid.
Internships are an excellent opportunity to gain real employment experience to add to your CV and to see what job role or sector you want to work in. Many of the large employers offer internships to those on their second or penultimate year and if an internship goes really well this can result in a graduate job offer at the end of your final year. They can be competitive and some have early closing dates, so start to look at them in your first year ready for early applications in your second year.
Create a good CV and covering letter but also look at application forms as employers can decide how you should apply. Some will require Psychometric tests so do practice using Graduates First.
LinkedIn is another good source of opportunities, so make sure you set up a LinkedIn profile and connect with employers that interest you and look at MMU Alumni.
