Augmented And Virtual Reality Partnership Growing With Shanghai University

The University welcomed partners from Shanghai University to develop collaborations in the field of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality.

The visit saw a range of AR and VR concepts explored for progression over the next two years. Specialist skills from both institutions will collaboratively create new ideas, spanning tourism, health and education, by employing cutting-edge technology, including:

• Streaming 3D content
• 3D generation, modelling and deformation Image modification and recognition
• Markerless tracking
• Gesture recognition
• Human Computer Interaction
• User Experience Design

Dr Timothy Jung, Director of the Augmented and Virtual Reality Hub at Manchester Metropolitan, welcomed Professor Wan, Director of the Institute of Smart City at Shanghai University, to the Business School on November 9 and 10.

The vision is to establish an ongoing Smart City project, using AR and VR between Shanghai and Manchester, with continued Royal Society and NSFC support.

During the visit , delegates met Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Jean-Noel Ezingeard and Pro-Vice-Chancellor for International Professor Jennifer Watling to discuss common interests and strategic development areas.

Professor Watling and Dr Diane Wright, Head of International in the Faculty of Business and Law, formally welcomed Professor Wan to Manchester Metropolitan.

A collaborative Smart Tourism project for the Baoshan province was discussed, with a view to initially create a proposal for a pilot study.

Shanghai University may also support the University’s AR/VR Hub helping a student to work on a project for up to three months at Manchester Metropolitan.

Professor Wan will return as a keynote speaker at Manchester Metropolitan’s ‘Fourth International AR and VR Conference’, June 21 to 22, 2018.

Collaborations are planned for the next two years, with funding won by Timothy from the Royal Society and additional support from China’s National Science Foundation of China (NSFC).
