My profile

Biography

I am a Senior Lecturer in Industrial Digitalisation (Digital Design & Manufacturing.). I have worked at Manchester Metropolitan University since 2016, specialising in Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Additive Manufacturing (AM/3D printing.). I bringing over twenty years of industry experience where I worked in Architecture visualisation, Product Design, and the AM industries. With a demonstrable record of academic and practical accomplishments (h-index 4, >139 citations) I work across campus, collaborating with artists, chemists, engineers, and many more to deliver practical solutions to design and manufacturing educational challenges. I am enthusiastic and passionate about delivering Digital Skills to all students regardless of their chosen discipline.

I am a member of the Advanced Materials and Surface Engineering Research Centre, and oversees the extensive range of 3D scanning and AM equipment located within PrintCity (Manchester Metropolitan University). Prior to transitioning to my academic role I established and managed the 3D Print facility at the university which has evolved into a unique AM research and teaching facility known as PrintCity. I write and deliver training programmes for staff, students and external companies.

During the Covid-19 lockdown I worked with the PrintCity team to develop and deliver, online, external training to companies in the Greater Manchester area in conjunction with the UK government “Made Smarter” initiative

I am currently developing similar workshops and lectures for artists and designers as part of the EU funded initiative ‘HE Traditional Crafts for the Future’, to provide digital skills to this community.

I have a long track record in hardware components as part of various research groups; this includes publishing academic papers such as ‘sensing platforms (Anal. Chem, 91, 12844-12851, 2019; Chem. Eng. J., 381, 122343, 2020) and 3D printing of electrodes for water splitting (Sus. Energ. Fuels, 4, 302-311, 2020).’

My other roles includes working with industry partners such as Autodesk, Siemens, Markforged, Formlabs, Fabricon, Darwen Terracotta etc. with projects ranged from highly technical electronic engineering projects for manufacturing companies such as Fabricon, to the creative use of scanning technology to develop digital based processes that complement the more ‘traditional methods’ for creating ornate castings previously employed at Darwen Terracotta.

Every Day in PrintCity is different, challenging and exciting.
